Slavery is still a *major* sore spot with many Americans (seeing as they held onto it de jure until the 1860s, and pretty much de facto until the 1960s). I think this has more to do with that taboo than political correctness.

It is, of course, utterly bonkers. I suggest renaming them Wilde and Bosie.

Why not rename them 'Husband' & 'Wife'.

It was actually abolished throughout the US in 1865 when the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified. But since only 2/3 or 3/4 (I don't remember which) of the states have to approve an amendment to the Constitution for it to become law, slavery was abolished as soon as the 2/3 or 3/4 of the states approved the amendment. What the other states did after that became irrelevant because they had to abide by the new law whether they liked it or not.

Within a couple of years I think, all the other states came around--even the ones that rejected the amendment at first.
But Mississippi was the lone holdout. Something about being p*ssed because they didn't get enough compensation for their slaves. Anyway, someone dedided that it was about time to take the slavery law off the books in the mid-1990s because it was making them look so ridiculous-or I should say, more ridiculous than they normally look. So they finally approved the 13th amendment as a formality. But since the Constitution is the law of the whole country, slavery was no more legal in Mississippi after 1865 than it was in New York of California.
