its probably because so many people are offering the codes over the internet. i did a random search on google, and it came up with plently of people giving out the codes.
Livejournal - No need for codes
Was looking at the livejournal main page and they no longer require you to have a code to register. So now would be the best time to register for an LJ if you've not already got one

You've never needed a code if you were paying for an account, so maybe as well as people offering codes willynilly, they have enough people paying for accounts to cover all their costs so can afford to give away journals 'free' (so to speak) *shrug*
yep, it basically says that in a roundabout way on the lj homepage, the paying members have enabled them to purchase enough hardware to enable them to give the accounts away for free again. The userbase is so massive now that's it's pretty much self-sustaining, the income from the paying users will be more than enough to fund future bandwidth and hardware requirements
I suppose the hope is if they offer the basic account for free, it might possible encourage people to then upgrade to paying - 3 icons may never be enough (looks at some of the people with 15+ )
I've got to the point where I'd quite like to upgrade to get the new layouts and more picture options.

It was definately the little extras that made me want to upgrade to paid user status.
