Nah, the pictures are much better when they take a few seconds to download. But you have to delete them pretty sharpish or they'll put you in jail...

Just to amplify on that heading, I wouldn't want to be James Naughtie, either... (or Stephen Pound, for that matter).

You think Will was being circumspect, then you ain't read Hamlet. He has a discussion with Ophelia regarding country matters (read it out loud... hey, it's not filth, it's Shakespeare!) Hie thee to read a book called "Shakespeare's Bawdy".

If you want filth in cannonical writers, the first two bastions of the language are the best place to look. Wily old Wil was more circumspect, but I don't believe you could read genuinely uncensored Chaucer until after it had been decided the wives and servants could cope!
As for Chaucer - agreed - though it is noticeable that the Reeve and the Miller (purveyors of the filthiest tales) are "lower-class" characters...
I remember one of my brothers saying Chaucer was old and boring. He wouldn't believe me when I read choice bits of the Miller's Tale...

Tis to this among others I refer! All circumspection is not equal, but that little one's been slipping under many a Radar for the past 400 years. My devilishly subtle inferences to it certainly passed my A-level Shakespearian expert by, though in truth that speaks more about said misnomer than the merits of Bill's obfuscation.
And as for Henry V ...!
Knowing that a pillar of the literary pantheon is responsible for James Nesbitt's intimate moment with an arse-bound poker on primetime BBC1 certainly warms the... cockles.

Whereas Mrs. Williams English was filthy with the best of them!

And it didn't slip under everyone's radar - witness Dr. Bowdler, who made Shakespeare clean so that ladies could read it....
Ah, but as Dr Johnson rightly said ...

"Dr Johnson, I'm pleased to see you did not include any manner of vulgarity in your dictionary."
"Ah Madam, I see you've been looking for it."
