MSWMM is the special custom format of the movie maker thing, you have to either encode or export the file to an mpeg, which you can then burn to dvd or save to the hard drive

But I've never used microsoft's movie maker thing so I can't really help you too much..

ok..... so how easy is that to do? Remember - you think I'm not tecchie minded well Len is worse

I have no idea, I've never used MS Movie Maker..

So Len is trying to produce a video-cd is he? Because that is what the software is trying to create.

These are the standard VCD resolutions. You should probably use PAL 25hz as its likely thats the framerate of your camera.

If its miniDV camera your audio may be at 32Khz and need converting.
You may be able to use 'Tmpgenc' for this which you can get free off the net - it has a Wizard for creating VCDs and will convert it for you. I'm just not sure it supports this silly MS movie maker format which I haven't a clue about. The resulting MPEG file will then be suitable to burn to a Video-CD.

If your trying to produce a DVD in fact, then you're doing something wrong. Not owning a DVD burner I cant help you much, but once again TMPGEnc may help as it has a wizard for DVD compatible MPEG streams.

Once TMpgEnc has created your file, you can burn it as a DVD with your DVD burning software.

Video creation is hardly a basic task, although there may be some magic software out there that 'does it all for you' - to be honest i thought that was what MS movie maker was supposed to do.

Phew - posting is hard work using a virtual keyboard on a pocket PC connected to the net via a Pay as you Go mobile at the [sarcasm]blistering[/sarcasm] speed of 9.6kbit.

I got software with my camcorder and it's *really* simple to use. I also got another one when I bought my firewire thingy which is a little more tricky to figure out but I'm getting there.

Ummmm...off the top of my head there's not much that can be done while the file is MSWMM format. Gonna have to provide some questions then can get a better idea of what you want/need:

1) What are you/Len actually trying to do? Just save the file or make a VCD/DVD/etc?

2) Is the original file still intact, i.e. could it be captured again (not the most popular option I'd guess but it might have to be done :$ )

3) Is there an option when opening the file with Windows Movie Maker to save/export it as an AVI or MPEG file?

Make a DVD of our Martial Arts Syllabus

At the moment we've not done any filming of the syllabus - Len has been playing on the PC making titles and this is what he wanted to burn to see how it would look - the filming of the syllabus will come when he knows what he's doing with the making of the DVD

Not that either of us noticed when we were both trying to sort this out

I've just started using MovieMaker (yep, another PC Xmas present!), and have found out some sh*t the hard way like you, but here's what I think:

1. You have saved the data (step 2) to create the *.mswmm file, but you have not yet created the output file (step 3).
The *.mswmm file is a small "pointer" file which points to (and organises) the various components of the large video clip files you created when you captured/imported. It does this without re-saving these large video files in order to save space on your hard disk.
Complete step 3 by saving the current *mswmm file to your computer (and/or VCD) to end up with a 'completed' video file (usually *.avi).

2. You CANNOT save to DVD using Windows Movie Maker, you can ONLY save to VideoCD (or for e-mailing/web). You need to use a 3rd-party product to burn to DVD. This is a BIG HOLE in Microsoft's MovieMaker software offering in my opinion, but they kindly point you to Sonic's MyDVD product from their own site:

I have successfully burned movie files to VideoCD (just a recordable CD), but these hold only about a seventh as much data (650MB) compared to a DVD (4700MB). So my next task is to establish what software to buy to burn my MovieMaker files to DVD (that's what I was doing rooting around here in the first place!). Who knows...... Sonic MyDVD??????
