If you've reported it to the room assistants/hall monitors whatever they call them at Kent and they've done nothing satisfactory about it, report it to the person in charge of the residence and/or the people in charge of accomodation at the University.

If they don't make them stop, you're only option will be to move to a different hall or flat, which seems extreme, but if it means he gets sleep and pass, it's not too bad.

Yuk, I had a couple of people like that in my hall at Uni, though not as serious (it only happened every so often, not all the time). I usually worked on the principle that, if they had been playing music until 4am, a dose of Nirvana at 7 wasn't going to be a nice way for them to wake up!

The Uni accomodation office should be able to do something, even if it is only to move him to another area, generally they will have a few rooms empty by this time of the year.

As already posted, the Accommodation Office should be able to provide him with some answers.

Also, he should try the student services department. Most universities have places like this where students can get advice on all sorts of non-academic issues

What DJ Billy said! The accomodation people can't ignore it, it's their responsibility to either solve the problem or relocate your boyfriend!

My main problem is the girl in the room next door has 8 songs on her computer and plays them over and over and over... usually Jessica Simpson or Celine Dion and usually at 9am on my days off! So i just fight back with funeral for a friend full blast when she's working, childish but satisfying!

This is where I sound very insular, so if anyone can help me out with terminology...
...here the authority for this sort of thing is the Dean. Do they have a Dean in Real Universities (i.e. not this weirdass ivory tower!) This is the person whose job it is to post notices about peoples' behaviour etc. Is there an equivalent of that where you are?? Uni should have given you a handbook/website where it tells you who to contact about bad behaviour...

The flat above mine (max. of 7 people per flat) are like that; playing the most bloody irritating music (having said that I can't stand most dance or r&b ) usually between the... *ahem* 'inconvenient' hours of 10pm and 3-4am. Very loud. With the windows open.

And scarily, they used to like propping the windows open with glass bottles which had a nasty tendency to drop and smash, very nasty considering they dropped right onto the bloody footpath leading to the main entrance! Hel-lo, can you say "major head injuries"?! Thankfully, they've gained a bit of sense and stopped. But the music still plays... last Friday (methinks) at 3:30 in the friggin' morning! This may sound daft, but how do they sleep at night??

Thanks guys. Matt's been to see if he can see the student support people but there's a massive waiting list. I really do feel for him, I don't think the room assistants care. They sometimes write the events in a book but never take it further

Short term answer only from someone who used to sleep with a snorer, try ear plugs.

Wax ones work better than sponge in my experience and are more comfortable, but they are one use only so more expensive.

I swear by ear plugs too. Block out all sorts of snoring, teeth grinding and sleep talking

What about fire alarms? *crosses fingers* Sydney will vouch for me on this, the fire alarms at Sunderland Uni are a bona fide pain the backside... Although having said that, they've only gone off once since Christmas! As opposed to two or three times a week before that...

Yeah Matt has bad firealarms. The nasty Greek guy smokes and always sets off the fire alarm at 3am

The ones here have been rumoured to go off at those displaying blatant pyromanic tendencies of using a toaster, frying eggs, or smoking way away from the alarm with all windows open. Go figure. *shrug*

Fire alarm solution.

First i must stress, i in no way advocate anyone doing this, this was just my personal solution.

I used to live in a thatched cottage with extreamly sensitive smoke and heat detectors. Since only me and mother lived there i felt perfectly confortable doing the following (we didnt smoke in bed, were careful with electrical equipment and didnt burn/forget about food. Smoke from frying (eg) chicken however, could trigger the alarm unnecessarily, and in a small cottage that hurt! and took ages to stop!

Smoke alarms work with a weak radioactive device and a sensor. Smoke particles block the radiation and the low reading on the sensor triggers the alarm.

Taping/sticking a bag over the alarm will stop a smoke alarm trigering.

I dont advocate this and in a public building, such as a dorm, this is also probably illegal.

But for private citizens with over zealious alarms (such as those for thatched cottages) this was my solution.

had it not been rented, a better solution would have been new alarms, but we wernt allowed to do that.
