I dont think its particularly about celebrating a Saint mre like a celebration of the countrys history.

In my opinion, it's about time we English made St George's Day a national holiday and celebrated it properly. It seems to work for the Scottish and Irish. And, as JtB pointed out, St Patrick was about as Irish as I am seeing as he hailed from Scotland.

Of course, I fully expect to be shouted down by people who will claim I am being overtly nationalistic, bordering on racist but I am proud to be English and the flag of St George.

I'd fly a flag of St George if I knew I wouldn't be asked to take it down again within an hour.....

As far as I'm concerned, St George is a classic example of human activity driving other species to extinction. As a fan of dragons, I find it hard to condone St George's Day, but would welcome an annual holiday to celebrate the country. A lot of other countries have this type of knees-up, so I think we should have a party too. I reckon sometime in July would be fun - far from Christmas and Easter, and a month that doesn't have any public holidays.

Well I have no idea how to be patriotic. I may put my St. George's flag out when we go out tonight but other than that, don't feel the patriosm at all. I feel more for St Paddy's day. Woop, Guiness!

Personally, I don't see any need to celebrate some mythical Saint, dragons or even the 'country, it's heritage and history'. I'm proud to be Human, not English, and I find the obsession with the nation tiresome and pointless. So... i'm not too fussed about St George's day really

Well, I think assuming people are going to act like that and having a moan about it is the beginning of digging a big hole

I think it's silly to say you'd be accused of bordering on being racist. I might think nationalist sentiment is silly, but I (and anyone else in their right mind) can see that being nationalist and being racist are seperate things that can and do coincide, but are not inextricably linked.

Flying a flag is by definition of overt nationalism. Whether that's a good or bad thing is down to you.

I'm all for a pointless national booze up, but nutty bat has convinced me we should pick a better saint. Maybe the Irish could spare us one: they're not short of a few, and they seem at lot better at this lark than we are!

I feel a lot of people use the holidays we already have as an excuse for a booze up and St. Patricks Day is no exception. Noone really cares for the day itself and why it's there, so why should St. George's day be made a holiday, or any other day be made a 'let's celebrate England' day? Noone would care for the reason, they would just use it as yet another excuse to go to the pub. i'm not against booze ups or anything, but i just don't see why people use these holidays as excuses for them. if you want to celebrate the day you should do it properly in church like it was meant to be done, if you want to go to the pub, go to the pub, but don't use the day as the excuse.

You need an excuse to go to the pub now?

Considering the widespread image of the English as 'lager louts', there is probably no more appropriate venue to celebrate 'Englishness' than a pub!

Not really because people do act like that. Pessimists are rarely disapointed. We live in times when its only acceptable to fly a national flag if theres a sporting event otherwise you maybe offending someone. Personally I think someone who is offended by a cloth on a stick very sad.

I've nothing much against the St George's flag (questionable attitude to dragons aside), but considering its history I'm surprised the white and blue get a look in to the Union Jack.

You know I wasnt saying the English are better than anyone else it was a similar sort of response to what people say when about the english and their history. If the english havent got anything to be proud of, then the human race has even less.

no one else has mentioned the fact not only did he never slay the mythical creatures St George also never set foot in England, so why do we celebrate St George's day again?

Well, I thought the point was we, as a nation don't celebrate St George's Day hence the discussion.

okay then but why would we celebrate him if he never did the things it's said and never even came here?

can we put in a petition to be able to celebrate thanksgiving then? it has nothing to do with us but its sounds like a great weekend a pre-emptive xmas-type annual holiday that you spend with your family and give thanks for what you have. sounds much nicer
