If you don't want to pay money, AVG's pretty good.

AV, malware killers, and firewalls are important, especially if you use Windows, and vital if you use Outlook & Internet Explorer.

In the unlikely event that anyone here has used any P2P file sharing software (Kazaa, etc) then they're probably already okay, because they're bound to have already installed AV & anti-malware before file-sharing, as not doing so would be suicidal

One of the networks at uni's been hit with one of these. The PCs affected kept shutting down and rebooting every 5 bloody minutes!

Not that I'm doubting the authenticity of your claim, and I'm only too glad to hear that you're uninfected - But when new, particularly virulent nasties (such as these) appear don't always take your scan results for granted.

Check the website for your particular virus provider that it does actually identify the new virus and that it has released a pattern update.

Then make sure that you have updated your AV product and confirm that it now reports the same pattern number.

If your PC reports a higher pattern number, don't panic - that's fine as some AV manufacturers will release multiple pattern updates in a single day. It really depends on the number of new strains which have been detected and identified. Just make sure that it isn't lower than the number specified by the web site - otherwise you are not protected.

I swear, whoever writes these things wants well and truly kneecapping. Not to mention the more sadistic virus-writing individuals getting a columbian necktie, perhaps?

Apparently so, according to the Metro free-sheets. But then again, I haven't read any other articels on it yet (besides the one linked to above, of course) so I don't know what else has been affected, or how badly... *crosses fingers*
