Sorry to hear you got mugged..not a nice thing to happen to anyone. I've never been mugged or seen it happen but I'd hope that if I did I would wade in and lend a hand.
Mugging
On Wednesday, me and my friend were mugged in a bus station. At around 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Obviously it was not a very nice experience, but the thing that really got to me was the fact that (initially) no one would help. This was a crowded bus station, I shouted at people for help and no one did. They stared at me as this was happening.
I am not gonna have a pity party because I understand that these things happen, and if it hadn't happened to me, it would have happened to someone else, perhaps someone who wouldn't have fought back. But I was just wondering about what other people's experiences of being mugged, seeing muggings, or stopping them were. So, shock me?

Never been mugged myself or seen one happen for that matter, i'd like to think i'd do something if i could. But i wouldnt give up my stuff without a fight, i'd rather get a kicking than submit to someone. But thats me.
Same here.

Sorry to here about this Acker.
As I said last night mate, well done for sticking up to the guy and eventually getting your phone back .
I'd like to think that I wouldn't give my stuff up without a fight, although, having never been in that situatuin it would be hard to tell. I think my instant reaction would be to run...fast!
I'd like to think that I would step in and help also, although the number of times the police tell people not to intervente and to just call 999, it wouldn't suprise me if people didn't stop to help. Here's hoping I never have to deal with that situation.
Didn't really answer your question though...

Well i'm going to go against the grain here and say I wouldn't put up a fight. None of my stuff is worth my health, or ultimately my life. I'd give them my wallet, my phone or whatever else they wanted. It can all be replaced.
Sorry to hear about unpleasant mugging-ness Acker, from what I hear, it's never fun, but at least you and your mate are OK!
i honestly don't know what i would do. i know i'm a bit of a coward so i would probably let them take it and then ring the phone people and have it blocked asap and let my insurance get me a new one. not a nice experience by any accounts and i think it's good that people can stick up for themselves in those kinds of situations.
As for helping other people, it would depend who it was. if it was someone who looked like they could handle themselves, then i probably would let it take its course and see if they were ok afterwards, if on the otherhand it was a frail old lady or small child that couldn't defend themselves, i would like to think i could step in, but i can't say for definite as i've never been in that situation.

sorry to hear about it
Its hard to say whether you would help someone or not, its not as simple as people think how do you know it way a mugging or just an arguement, If someone was shouting for help which you were Acker then I and hope other people would help ALthough if you gave the mugger a good hiding it may be you up in court.
And I see nothing wrong with fighting back you've worked for your things so why should someone take them from you.

Sorry to hear that Acker.
I've never been mugged, or witnessed one. The closest I've come is being accosted by a Meat Loaf lookalike at Barking station after closing time and being asked, "So, mate, what'd ya think of niggers? They like us?" with the clear implcation a kicking would follow a wrong answer. Managed to talk my way out of that one.
Would I fight back? Depends on the attacker/s I suppose.

I've escaped a mugging, but I have been held up at gunpoint.
I was alone in the video store I was working at when it happened. I didn't even see it coming, all of a sudden there was just a man in a balaclava with a gun infront of me demanding to know where the safe was.
It wasn't my stuff so I just took him straight through to the office and positioned myself between him and the CCTV machine so that he wouldn't see it and take the tape (the dumbass). I went automatic during the attack and it wasn't until afterwards that I realised how scared I was.
I totally get how you must have felt, though as I was completely alone at the time I didn't have the frustration that nobody was helping (just the annoyance that someone had called in sick )
I did everything right and so did you. Any experience you can walk away from uninjured is a positive

being a teeny tiny girly girl, i wouldn't put up a fight, as has been said before, i wouldn't want to put myself at risk in any way for the sake of a few belongings....i guess if it was something incredibly important to me, for instance something with sentimental value or something irreplacable, i'd try and do something....but ultimately, i'd give in!
as for helping someone, i wouldn't be much use myself but i'd definetly try and either rope someone else in to help, or try and remember as much about the incident in the hope of helping catch the person..

Unfortunalty you hear more and more about people who go to help, being attacked and sometimes even killed by thugs.
Unless i was sure i could get out of a situation if i went to help im afriad all i could do is call the police.

Thanks for all your sympathies you guys, that's really nice.
And I'm basically fine now. It hurts a little to eat sometimes and I've got ugly yellow marks on my face but ah well they'll be gone soon.
It's kinda cool to hear that none of you have ever been mugged 'cause at least that means that, I dunno, it's not spreading too far or something. I'm not sure if that makes sense.
But Yvonne that sounds horrible! Much worse than my mugging story. You remained very calm and stuff though. And yeah me too, I was only really thinking properly afterwards, 'cause you see I chased this guy for a while and I only realised afterwards that he could have been bringing me to some alleyway where his friends would stab me or whatever. Good job he wasn't that well prepared.

It's like some sort of defense mechanism. It was only when I was safe that I got all scared, started crying like a baby and ran through the "what if..."s.

I'm not sure that it's worse because he didn't hurt me, he pulled me about by my arm and that was it, whereas you've ended up all bruised Ah well, I managed to get a couple of weeks off work (fully paid) and loads of pressies, so spread the news about a bit and see what happens
Upon your adivce Yvonne, I have spread the word around, but I didn't get any presents!
Well it's my birthday tomorrow so maybe people are saving them hehe that must be it.
Thanks, you're well nice!

Well, that's just sucky and unfair!
Hope you have a good birthday anyway

I think I'm too gobby sometimes and I'd be outraged that someone tried to take my stuff so 'd either get myself into more trouble by fighting or cry, you don't really know until you're in that situation though do you. I don't think I could just stand and do nothing if someone was being mugged infront of me though!
Acker - hope you're ok hunny, it's really crappy and people are bad and mean. **hugs** Hope everyone gets you lots of lovely nice things for your birthday! xx
