I agree with alot of what's been said, I originally joined BUK because it was Buffy related but mostly just enjoyed the random general chat and that's were I tend to post on here too.

I think it's probably difficult for new people because alot of us have been posting for so long, but to be fair I don't know that many people and have only ever met a couple of you (and that was because SPIKE promised me a carebear hehe) because i'm quite shy with new people!

I am going to do my best to be brave and make it to a meet lol, it may have quietened down but i'm not going anywhere, i like it here! xxx

Hehe it was good to meet you too, I'm going to try, I want to meet everyone i've been chatting to for the past however many years lol!x

I haven't been around much lately mainly due to college work and exams and when i have been on the net i've just wanted to chat to people and been too tired to post. But in the last week or so i've been trying to make an effort to post more

I dunno, i guess once i stop posting for a little bit and just lurk, i find it difficult to get back into the swing of it lol

I guess the community has changed, but it's the same as any community, people move in and move out, people change, but i still think it's a positive community

I reckon this place is very much still alive and kicking... I was around when the original BUK was on the go too, and because of real life stuff I've been a bit lurky too- trying to post more frequently now though.

I've met quite a few folks from here too- the most recent was meeting Ming at Wolf SG-7, and they're a very friendly bunch, all in all!

I actually think the variety is what keeps this place going... it's nice to have a place you can post everything from your own fanfic to opinions on Big Brother etc.

Same here. On Saturday I had approx 17 members from the board at my house (plus another 5ish who don't post here but I'd never had met if it wasn't for some of the others). Then there were another 10 or so who couldn't make it for various reasons. All of those people I consider friends, obviously some to a different extent than others but if it wasn't for T21 I doubt I'd ever have met them (don't usually move in geek circles ) That is the one thing I'm grateful to T21 for. It got me some fantastic friends

There may be busier posting boards around, but I doubt many of them have developed the community that this one has. I doubt there are many other places like this where people meet up with, go on holiday with, live with or even get married to people they've met!

Inevitably that's going to have an effect on the boards, because rather than being the only means of communication for members, it's one of many

Also due to time constraints I like the fact that I can post something one day and see replies the next day. Other sites seem to have people posting on them 24 hours a day so that if I post something on them one day by the time I have a chance to return to the thread the next day it is on about page 5 with 150+ new topics started in between.

I've seen similar things happen on convention boards, you see a thread you've posted on before and go back and it's full of all sorts of nonsense. Or there are a variety of threads all about the same thing. I may have become disorganised in real-life, but I like the tidiness or not trawling through stacks of duplicate threads or trying to read through really bad kewltalk Although if I'm away for a little while, the catching is still a nightmare

The only place that could probably relate is the original bronzer crowd. I'm not sure if they still have a main site they use, but their community spirit is still going very strong with similar events a year (holidays & mini-meets) and relationships

Although, there was one other english buffy (I think?) board I breezed by once that had been doing stuff like us for years too, it was like entering a parallel universe It has to be said that the "busier posting boards" that I've seen briefly in the past seem to have people from so many countries on that it would be hard to organise anything similar. They also seem to have much younger fan bases.

i've never come to a meet, so sometimes that makes me feel a little bit alienated on posts that relate to what someone looks like, or acts like i guess....but i don't feel pushed out in any way really...ive been around for years, from back in the buffyuk days and just because ive never had the time or the money to get my ass to a meet, i still feel happy visiting here,n and welcome

Keep your eye's open for TParty 2005 (hoping there's going to be one). If you get enough notice, you can start to save.

It doesn't have to be an expensive weekend. Some people arrive on Friday and depart on Sunday, but other simply come for the main event (as I did for my first meet back in *thinks*... 2001 - last StakeHouse party).

There are options regarding getting to/from the venue. With enough notice you can get cheap train tickets (there are normally groups travelling en masse from the major cities), or you can put out a shout to see if anyone else is travelling by car from your neck of the woods and has a space.

Similarly with hotel accomodation many room share, reducing the cost by a half (possibly more, depends on the number of bodies).

Equally, it doesn't have to be the TParty. Meets are organised in different areas, and don't have to be expensive. Teresa's BBQ cost me a few bob in petrol and my contribution to the scoff. Just keep an eye on the meets forum to see what's going on.

One thing is for sure, you should try the TParty at least once

I seem to find myself drifting back here at the moment, which has rather surprised me.

I've always argued that once people started meeting up in real life, it took some of the shine off the boards and reduced their importance.

Also, since the height of B-UK, instant messaging has expanded spectacularly and journal communities have sprung up from nowhere.

Where once Stu Ward had a site with a message board at its heart and a community built up around it, we now have a situation where someone like Teresa has a journal where something similar is happening.

New medium, same effect, and the old ones are losing out to it.

I think that's something that was always likely to happen. The boards and chat are now a small part of a wide-ranging community. 4 years ago the boards and chat were the community.

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing though. I'd much prefer this community to develop as it has done, rather than the board still be as it was 4 years ago and with no-one having met anyone else

Ironically, I think the increasing number of people using journals has led to new or 'long lost' members coming into the community, leading to an increase of activity on T21
