MSN help required.

Okay, I think someone asked this once before but I can't remember what was said.

When I got my computer last year, unknown to me an old version of MSN messenger was installed on it. I went and downloaded the newest version straight from msn.com. It took me a while to figure out that, even if I had the version I downloaded switched off, the version that was installed with the computer when I bought it was on in the background, even though it didn't show on my taskbar.

What I want to do is uninstall that version from my computer. I've looked in add or remove on the control panel and it's not listed there.

Can someone give me some pointers at how to uninstall it so I only have the one version running on my computer?

I'm not the foremost authority on this, but I remember reading something recently about this - and from what I can recall it applies to XP. If you haven't got XP, ignore what I'm about to say.

Initially, it doesn't seem to be possible to remove the pre-installed version of MSN, as it doesn't appear in Add/Remove programs list. But after applying service pack 1, it appears in the list and you can then go ahead and remove it.

Gobstopper's idea is probably the best, but an alternative is to do what I've done (I don't have service pack 1 either).

First find the .exe file for the pre-installed version of messenger, this will probably be in "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" And then just rename the file (I've changed mine to be called "xmsmsgs.exe"

. Then, although it's still installed, Windows can't find the file and it can't run it.

Okay, stupid question No. 2....How do I apply service pack 1?

Start button -> All Programs -> Windows Update

Download and install any critical updates it shows you.
