You should have been given some proper cleaning stuff when you had it done if you went to a decent place. if not, try using detox/detol whatever it is or something like tcp. it might sting a bit but it should give it a good cleaning out. also change the bar/ring for a clean one and clean that properly before putting it on, and clean the old one when you take it out. if you only have one, take it out and clean it thouroughly. if that still doen't work, then you'll probably have to take it out as infections can spread quite nastily
Body piercing infection
I've tried searching for this, but not getting any joy, if you think that your piercing is infected, what should you do? (besides the option of taking it out)
Because i'm worried I may have a teensy infection, and I don't really want to take it out unless I really have to, because this is the 2nd time i've had to have it done.

Well they gave me some special cleaning stuff when I got it done, I think it's because it got caught the other day and it may have ripped slightly.
I think I'll change it, and I think I remember the piercist said if it got infected then I should clean it in salt water, does this sound right?

I know that works on mouth ulcers, so it could be worth a shot, but i would highly recommend a proper disinfectant as that would definately limit the spread if there's going to be any
I'd clean it out thoroughly with a saline (salt) solution, and keep a close eye on it- if the infection does get any worse, head for the doc- the practice nurse at your GP's will be able to give you some good stuff that won't react to your skin- tcp/savlon etc is all very well for cleaning a graze, but if there's an infection already present, it isn't such a good idea.
That's my tuppence worth, anyhow *chuckle*

Where did you have it done Kat? Pleeease tell me it wasnt Bananas
Although it's definately my fault rather than theirs.
I had a slight infection in my eyebrow piercing. Didn't(read as couldn't) take it out and went to the chemists. I asked the chemist if Dettol would help and she went schizo, refused to serve me it and said I *had* to go to the doctors and get it checked
Thought 'fudge it' went to the local supermarket and bought some Dettol. Applied it to my eyebrow and washed the ring with it and the infection was gone within a week. Not had any problems with it since.

Okay, now for the sensible advice
Salt soak solution, 1 cup boiling water, 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt, dissolve salt, allow to cool until warm, soak affected area for 5-10 minutes 3 times a day.
Should draw the infection out in a few days
Vit E cream should help it recover

If I had a piercing go manky it would be straight out. You can get septacimia (sp?) from stuff like that. Which is probably why the chemist went mad at you Milky. What's the point of asking for advice if you're not gonna take it?

Yeah, this is true (septicaemia by the way ). i had my belly button pierced a while back and i had to take it out after 2 years as it went manky for no reason. also it was wonky and too big even though i went to a very posh place and it cost me a bomb.

Just for the record, septicaemia is very very bad so be very very careful and clean
Like everyone said clean it lots (Saline solution)and if it stays manky get your piercer to check it and if it has to come out then so be it. All my piercings have healed really slowly so I'm used to them going all manky and stuff, your best bet is to get it checked! xx
P.S - If the studio is as scabby as Katie says then maybe go to another place to ask them to check it! x

If it never seems to heal then you might not like stainless steel (or it might be cheap jewellery with a high nickel content), then try swapping over to Titanium instead
Gonna try the salt solution, and if it's not better in a few days then I think I'll go to a piercing place and get it checked out.
Glad i'm not the only one who's gone all manky!
Okay that came out wrong
