I guess it depends on what information they actually carry on them. For instance, the ID cards carried by the French (and the photocard part of the new UK driving licences) have home addresses on them which I think is a dangerous idea, especially for women. Plus, it's like everything else - the law abiding amongst us will get ID cards and the criminals will just get fakes. I think it's just another step closer to the "big brother" society George Orwell invisioned in 1984.

Just try and live without one, even if you gave up work and became homeless you are still in the system. Even a lot of people that are homeless reley on the NHS Dr's etc etc. People can become lost from the system but in reality you are still there.

Not really, I could go to doctors as a homeless person and say i've forgotten my name. Obviously I dont have an address and i've also forgotten where i used to live. Or I say I used to live on Button Moon. Either way, they'd still treat me. Admittedly, if I said I used to live on Button Moon i'd probably get a few thousand volts put into my head by force. Yes they do still give ECT. Scary I know.

LOL @ button Moon....I didn't really say what I meant to say there. In all honesty would you want to become homeless and unemployed just to prove the point that you can become "lost" in the system? as I said in reality you are still listed. If you in this country wish to have any form of comfort in your life ... a roof over your head, a job (maybe) then you have to have some form of identity. If you want to work (legally) or claim benefits you have to use your NI number. Hence my reasoning for saying in your words " Your tagged ". You have no choice in the matter from the moment you are born you are a statistic like it or not.

We are never all going to agree on this, the same way I like to eat meat and other people don't. I support the Gunners and others support rubbish teams and likewise I have no problem with ID cards and you do ....if we all liked and agreed on the same things wouldn't life be dull

Maybe I would like to lost in the system. For me it's alluring. Many things are. I quite like the idea of walking around the world for instance. I reckon it would
take a life time, but what a journey.

You maybe misunderstood where I was coming from, and it's a subtle point that many people miss when talking about our freedoms. Having a freedom is more about the possibility the freedom offers, than the freedom itself. I get a good feeling when i've got a full tank of petrol. The possibility of going anywhere in the UK that I want to is there. In reality, i'm probably just gonna drive a mile into town. But its the possibility that makes it feel so good.

Imagine the following scenario. You live in a peaceful and happy state. Things are good. There's just one small catch. You have a small explosive device implanted inside your body. You're totally free, all the normal freedoms apply...EXCEPT one thing. There is a large building with an unassuming entrance. The door is unlocked. You are not allowed to know the purpose or contents of the building. If you enter the building your head will be blown off by the chip in your head. Now does that sound like a place you want to live?

If it does, you're an ideal candidate for a compulsory ID card.

If it sounds like your idea of hell, you're probably not so keen on compulsory ID cards.
