Going by her appearance with Amanda Platell on Radio 4 (Women's Hour, I think), she must have presented a well balanced case, having a chip on each shoulder, as the cliche goes.

Burchill does try to jump on thicko bandwagons and, being quite short and stumpy, usually gets dragged around for a bit before retiring, knees abraded, heading for a bath.

Julie Burchill's a classic troll. Indignation is its own reward. She judges sucess by the size of her complaints bag, not the quality of her work, and she's very good at it. Who knows if they're her real opinions, and who cares. I hope, no doubt forlornely, that one day the media will grow up and stop giving the tiresome attention seeking trollop airtime.

I can't say I know who Birchill is, really. I've seen her around the "talking head" circuit a bit, but I have no idea what she does.

I did however find this programme infuriating. Classic Sun reader TV. Pet the scumbags. "There, there - you're lovely as you are"

First thing that annoyed me was that the makers - knowingly or otherwise - completely failed to grasp the actual definition of "chav" - going instead with a blanket description covering all working-class people.

The "salt of the earth" comment made me spaz out as well. "Salt of the Earth" is a (somewhat patronising) description of the honest working man (or woman). Decent, hard-working, honest people who don't believe in taking handouts and have genuine pride in what they do. Nothing could be further from the description of the average chav.

When people are hostile to chavs, what they generally mean are the "excluded" parts of society. Basically, the scrounging thieving ****kickers with nothing better to do than hang around the off licence all day or go nicking in JJB Sports after they've signed on. They always seem to have more money than everyone else, and little or no regard for the rest of society. Since when did flipping the bird become an acceptable greeting? In last night's programme, they turned the cameras on a group of chav kids and they all did just that. You only have to walk down any street in any town to see the people I mean. The girls and boys in matching tracksuits and trainers and too much gold who seem to be constantly spitting and swearing. Charming.

But according to Ms Birchill, anyone who's not a chav is "middle class" and all middle class people are secret chav wannabe's.

In the classic schoolyard argument - we're all just jealous.

watched this on Mix last night and Julie Burchill (whoever she is anyway) was so far of the mark with Chav's it wasn't even funny. Trying to say the working class are all chavs

I finally watched this on Mix yesterday, and regretted missing 'Tripping The Void' for it. JB a chav? Yesss, if Waynetta Slob is one, too... 'Chavs "know who they are", but does Julie?

There seems to a flaw too, in her theory that Kate Moss outshines toffs in terms of beauty, merely by dint of being a chav. Kate Moss has the looks to be a model, and then got the training to make the most of it. Her background, if chav it be, is irrelevent.

It's a step up the ladder for Jules, though. Next stop, 'Moral Maze'...
