Hi folks, 'tis my turn to smile nervously at T21's technologically-minded Jedi Masters, and hope they're strong enough in the Force to help me avoid the necessity of calling Microsoft's stupidly expensive support lines...
A week or two ago, I bought an ASUS DVD+/- RW drive and all's gone well except for one niggling little detail: the sodding thing point blank refuses to write to DVD.
Windows (Pro with SP2) can read from the thing fine, and write to CD seemingly OK, but when I try to write to a blank DVD, it tells me to "insert writable media into drive E:\" (or something along those lines).
I've even downloaded a firmware upgrade from the manufacturer's website with no improvement, (nonetheless I would've been a bit less confused if the thing had come in something more substantial than a frigging plastic bag, never mind with instructions or a set of drivers or something...
)
Microsoft.com tells me it knows exactly what's wrong with it, but tells me I've got to ring up and maybe pay upwards of £30-£40 to fix it - the bloodsucking... erm... [individuals who practice incest with a certain half of their parentage]
Anybody got any clue where I can get the fix Microsoft recommend anywhere else?

looking at the microsoft page the fix is only for SP1 and should of been included in SP2. check the file details for Udfs.sys file and see if you have the newest version.
Also try a different format DVD + instead of - or visa-versa.
see if you can try the drive in a different PC.
try downloading Nero and see if that helps to write the DVD's.
