If you didnt know, previously T21 lived on a server located in the US, but now we have a shiny new (and cheaper )home that is really tailored to our needs.

Welcome home T21 It must be said that until recently the old server has been brilliant, I noticed very few outages over the years. Hope this one will be as good. I see you're over at "Bytemark", behind Jump Networks, they should be pretty good - they're run by proper spods I've just recently been given an account on a box there by a friend of mine, incidentally.
any excuse for a party is always welcome, and what better occasionin the words of waynes world, "if you book it they will come"

Hey can I ask you a really big favour......
I'm doing like a young enterprise type thing, but at uni, and i'm meant to be getting the estimated costs,......
one of the costs would be running a website, similar to this i guess, i was just wondering if you could email me how much it costs to run tangent21.......i'd be very grateful, cos i don't have a clue bout websites and you seem to so.....
One email coming up (still need to write this so will take about 20 - 30 minutes from my posting now)

Although you didnt ask me, i'll chip in my two penny's worth as i've investigated running a smallish hosting company for some time. For one, costs are really low now in the hosting business because of really fierce competition. You can still pay a mint though if you dont know where to look. If you were a big corporate for example, you'd probably pay some reputable company quite a lot of money for hosting, web design and maybe some consultancy. Design and Consultancy are still the things that cost.

If you're savvy with web stuff and just want the hosting you have your pick of very cheap providers. If you just wanna host a basic site, they can be had for pocket money. If you want to do something like T21 does, where you're running your own custom board you need a virtual or dedicated server that gives you total control over what you're doing.
With all hosting, the main cost boils down to how much bandwidth you'll use in most cases, which roughly equates to how popular the site is. For most stuff you could afford it as a hobby. To run a high bandwidth site you could end up paying hundreds of dollars a month. For a very high bandwidth site, make that thousands of dollars a month.
All this stuff is generally peanuts for big companies, but for a guy who sets up a site that becomes popular overnight its more difficult.
Hope that gives you a little insight - i havent gone into any detail like Chambler probably has.
