Wristbands - What's your take on them?

As the title says really.

Initially it was Lance Armstrong that came up with the idea to promote awareness of cancer and obviously to raise money to find a cure. Then roughly at the same time, Radio 1 came up with the idea of the 'Beat Bullying' wristband. This one was purely to promote awareness. Unfortunately, this seems to have spawned a 'fashion' and everyone wants one.

That tied with the fact that you can pretty much find a wristband to promote any cause that's going.

2 most recent that I can think of are a joint venture between the Samaritans and Kerrang! to promote the 'Rock for Life' campaign and the newest of all being Ozzy Osbournes 'Wank for Peace' wristband. To quote Ozzy....

i'd rather have a wank than take a bullet!

I admit. I wear 2. Radio 1's Beat bullying band because I was bullied in school. And the Breast Cancer research one as that holds very close to someone in my family.

So do you out there have any? Do you think they have just turned into a cheap fashion accessory (sp)?

Not to mention the dumbass' that are trying to make a profit outta them by selling them in eBay

I've got a Beat Bullying band for the same reason as you and a Live Strong band.

I've also got a black LiveWrong band which is purely a fashion statement. I keep stealing Claire's Anti-Racism band as well as it's a cause I believe in.

I think it has turned into a major fashion thing however i can't see that lasting too long. Lets see who's still wearing them in a years time.

I know some of them have youth sizes

But I guess there is also a line to draw with charity. I remember sometime a few months ago where someone had already done their bit and said no to giving anymore out. Was it you T?

IMO that's more than fair anyway. Some of them are charging anywhere between nothing to Â£3 for each band.

I've never had one, mainly for the same reason as Teresa

I think it's inevitable that certain things are going to get picked up as a fashion accessory. When I was at school everyone had to have a Berghaus, even though no one ever went climbing up mountains!

Ultimately, if the wristbands are designed to raise money then I don't think it matters why people are buying them. If they're designed to raise awareness however then it does matter.

The real problem with these though is the market for conterfeit bands. You just have to look at the Live 8/eBay thing this week to see that some people have no limits on how low they'll stoop to make money :/

As far as I'm aware, the only one that was to raise awareness, and not 'charged for' was the Beat Bullying wristband. The Black and White 'Anti-Racism' double-wristband isn't officially charged for I think, but a donation is kinda expected...

Even the Radio 1 website has a crapload of photos with a load of celebs that are wearing them.

I remember hearing stories of kids in school having their Beat Bullying wristbands snatched off them by other kids

Miss Corrupt That deaf, dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball!

I have an anti-bullying one, because, as most others, I was bullied. Apart from that, I probably wouldn't wear one unless it meant something to me. Not because I'm trying to make a statement, I'm just not an acessories type girl.

Oh, and my wrists are so skinny, I have my beat bullying one in a kiddy size!

Nope

People don't seem to realise it's NOT a charity gig it's to raise awareness. The people performing are getting paid to do it and the money from the texts is to cover the event (i.e. pay the performers). If it was for charity then it would be different.

I know itÂ’s not a charity gig, but I donÂ’t think thatÂ’s the point here.

ItÂ’s the fact that people are trying to profit out of something that has solely been organised to help people living in poverty that I disagree with (and also the fact that those tickets could have gone to people who actually wanted to go).

The performers may be getting paid, but they're actually contributing something. They're the ones who are raising the awareness

I did a thread on this ages ago. I have a couple, but I don't really wear them. It's such a chav fashion wear I live. I'm happy with just knowing I gave the money to charity, I don't have to wear a wrist band to do that.

And it's slightly ironic how at my sixth form, it's uncool if you don't wear one and all the "popular" people wear the beat bullying ones

I have loads of them.

I dont wear them as fashion items, i wear them because i think if someone looks at me wearing them and even has the slightest pang of guilt because they do something (i.e. are rasist) then i think the bands have worked, its the same reason i wear my charity pins.

I have all the charty shop bands too.

Im not going to say on here as it may be libel, but do a search on where the Make Poverty History wristbands are made.

You aint supporting what the wristband stands for if you buy one.
