The bill ended up at £25 (£30 minus the £5 refund). Add the £2 tip and the £3 that they pocketed (£1 each) and it comes to £30

Confused? You will be...
I'm stuck at home and my back hurts *cue violins* so I was sat watching the BBC breakfast newsy type program when they posed:
Three friends went out to dinner, the bill came to £30 and they all paid £10 each. The waiter realised he'd made a mistake and refunded the friends £5, so they each took £1 and gave the remaining £2 to the waiter as a tip.
With me so far?
Well, if the friends paid £10 each and received a refund of £1, that means they all paid £9 each. 3 x £9 = £27 and the waiter only put £2 in his pocket... so where's the other £1?

Yeah, but if 3 x £9 = £27 and the waiter took £2 that only makes £29, so where's the extra quid?

Posted: 14:05 Jul 21 2005 The £2 that the waiter took is already counted in the £27. It doesn't need to be added on to it. The remaining £3 is in their pockets

The way I explained it to Sam was that the bill was £25 so they made it up to £27 (to include the £2 tip) which is easier to divide by three and then they took £1 each. Why the tightarses didn't just leave the full £30 I'll never know

The first time I saw this problem the waiter pocketed the £2 and pretended to the three men that the refund was only £3.
