Just the basics, really. Make sure you agree the inventory with your landlord and check the condition of all fixtures and fittings before you hand over a security deposit. Some unscrupulous buggers will try to palm off old damage/losses so be sure everything is signed and agreed.

Make sure you go over all the terms carefully before you sign. Don't let a landlord pressure you into signing too quickly and missing a sneaky clause somewhere.

Like any binding contract, a rental agreement should contain all the terms and conditions of your lease. Don't be afraid to ask if there's something you don't see or don't understand.

If sharing a communal area (kitchen/bathroom etc) or any utilities with other tenants, make sure you know what the arrangements are. People nicking the last of your milk once is annoying - doing it every day is grounds for a gun toting crime spree.
