I have a question too - can the OP be more specific as to which character we're looking at - eg comic/book canon, movie canon (if so, which version) as some characters have quite a few incarnations to choose from.

Example:

Mr Hyde vs Frankenstein

If we're working from Van Helsing movie canon, then yes Mr Hyde would rip the Monster to shreds as he's massive and fast and the Monster is a bit useless.

However - originally Mr Hyde was to all intents and purposes the same as Dr Jekyll - the difference was that Mr Hyde was amoral and psychopathic. Still a skinny bookish ittle man, though. Put him up against a man who is deliberately twice the size of normal people and half-mad and the contest gets more interesting.

Ditto with a lot of the comic book characters - Terminator could totally take Doc Oc from the comics - the guy is a weedy fat bloke - get past the arms and he has a glass jaw.

I would've thought it'd be more fun to leave it open to interpretation, plus not everyone knows the various different versions of various characters - some examples: everyone always assumes "the Terminator" means the Arnie version, but why not T2's Robert Patrick (T-1000) or T3's Kristianna Loken (T-X)? Plus it's true Classic Doc Ock was a pansy past the arms, but there's the movie version, or even better the Ultimate comic version, who's a psychotic (and heavily upgraded) badass... and there's the various Catwomen, Wolverine, hell, I could go on all day! (Please? )

Plus it gives me more freedom for crappy jokes in the fight commentary!

EDIT: Plus, how could it always be to-the-death with characters like Batman, who refuse to kill?

Hehehe OK OK, hard to eliminate all the ambiguity, but for what its worth...

The fight is to 'at least' physical incapacitation, but as you say, given the lethality of most of the characters, once the other guy is down, they are probably going to finish them off!

As for versions of characters, I would have to say the intention was generally the 'highest profile' version of the character. So Batman tends to be the gritty movie version, not the podgy 60's tv Batman.

Doc Oc made it in this year purely because of Spiderman 2, he wasnt well known enough otherwise, so Id have to go with the film version. Likewise Catwoman made it in because of the film, and Elektra

Dracula I always meant as the ultra-hard lord of darkness, not the pansy Buffy version BTW.

The Terminator is def Arnie, as he was the first, and while the others might have been referred to buy their model numbers, or as being 'A terminator', Arnie is the definite article

If you want to present evidence for your own case, sure, but not to attempt to prove that someone elses choice is wrong.

But hey, just use what god gave you, and if you can only manage to pick a winner based on the shape of his ass, then go with it
