Slobodan Milosevic found dead in the Hague

Holy Moley!

I've not gotten round to checking the news channels or the papers yet (only found out about this a few hours ago as I've been waylaid by a nasty headache today and sleeping it off, so everyone else probably already knows) but spotted this on the BBC News page in big, bold letters taking up half the front page, so it kinda grabbed my attention.

Milosevic, in the Hague for war crimes (listed here) since '01, was found dead in his cell on Saturday, but suicide has been so far ruled out as a cause of death despite his claims (only the day before) of being poisoned in his cell. An autopsy is due to be carried out Sunday morning.

Many would say the world's a slightly better place with him no longer in it (personally, I'm one of them, but I digress) but this does mean he can never be fully tried, and as stated on the BBC page, his death "is a blow to prosecutors, who had been hoping to convict him as being part of a joint criminal enterprise that operated across the former Yugoslavia, intent on setting up a greater Serbian state."

So, what are your thoughts?

I'd love to have seen him tried and convicted.

However, one odd thought did occur to me when I heard about bit in the statement about a medical officer confirming Milosevic was dead. By shooting him in the head perhaps?

Chambler A computer without Microsoft is like a chocolate cake without mustard.

They seem to be dropping like flies in that prison.... I think thats number 3 that died there now (of which 2 are recent). These trials are way too complex and take way too long because they want to convict them of too much in one go. Why not get them on some stuff that is easy to prove and puts them away for 10 years or so than you have all the time in the world to convict them for the rest of the crimes they commited. At least that way some justice is served quickly before they all died of old age!

This might actually be a reprieve for the war crimes tribunal, as a rediculously overlong indictment (60 seperate counts, covering just about every military action Milosevic was ever involved in) spread the prosecution's case so thin there was a very real chance of Milosevic being acquitted. The tribunal itself is a travesty of justice, from the absurdly overlong trial (would have been thrown out any domestic court years ago) to the complete lack of impartiality in being funded by NATO (there's a solid argument to be made that NATO is responsible for crimes comprable to Milosevic's). The West's grubby involvement in the Balkan wars make us the last people to be dishing out victor's justice.

And with that caveat done with, good riddance to the murderous old bastard.
