There were many, many more threads altogether, I’m not sure if anyone has retained full BuffyUK logs and we can perform a statistical analysis of the threads by content, but I’d wager the mix was probably not dissimilar. The fact that there were so many threads overall, with so many different members contributing gave everyone room to manoeuvre.
Think they're on a CDRom somewhere, but I ain't got access to it, just going from memory. Yep, there was room to maneuver, that's probably a big part of the problem, but people's attitudes (on both sides) play a part, whatever the member count.
But they were never a “dreaded politics crowdâ€, you might have liked them to be, I don’t know, but they were just members! And yes, all of those members yourself included put up some of the most interesting posts on the site in each of the subfora.
That's the last thing I wanted! It's a label we've got landed with, one I don't like, but there's only so many things even I can take issue with in one thread. Lots of the debates crossed over on BUK, like when I had a go at the video censors for cutting "Dead Man's Party" in case it influenced kids to hotwire cars during the next zombie attack, and no one was a single-issue poster.
How I wish I could hear that for real.
What’s “Lost
But what you’ve said here is true, folks have left, as much from your attitude as from mine or Yvonne’s or Milky’s. For the most part I think most people, not just you, post elsewhere what 5 or 6 years ago they’d have posted on BUK.
Yeah, probably so, but I admitted as much two pages back, and said I'm willing to change my posting style, but no change works if it's one-sided.
Most of the time my impression of you is that you are the one who lacks wit or decency and is dishing out the hassle, the feeling is more than likely mutual. That’s the problem, you’re asking people to behave in a certain way when most of them may perceive you as the antithesis of that model.
They can perceive it if they want, that's their business, but the fact remains I don't dish out personal insults and jump into threads I've no interest in with the sole purpose of disrupting them. Sure my posting style's become abrasive, but theirs is hardly less so. So like you say, yes, the feeling is more than mutual. I've long past looking to share out blame, however, provided we can get it stopped.
And being as blunt as I can be and I don’t mean to offend
But when the problem is the staff member, the normal members don’t feel they have a leg to stand on so they leave
Ok, I can appreciate that, but that's why we have admins, and far as I know no-one has an issue with them. Admins who haven't shown a tendency to come down hard on members expressing complaints: just look at this thread! (That's a compliment BTW admin. )
Oh, and not offended, I really don't offend easily.
Not “I really didn’t like the book†or “ Am I the only person in the world that thought the book was over-rated?†Y’know things that prompt a reply and may even have encouraged discussion. Therein lies the difference between staff member and member As one of the “ dreaded politics crowd†it’s a great post, coming from a staff member, frankly it sucks.
But it is po-faced tosh.
If I'd said that about someone's holy book, fair enough, but I said it about an airport novel, and you missed off the next bit where I said I thought the film had promise.
One of the reasons I quit as a staff member was because I’d had enough of compromising my posting style doing my best to be a nice staff member. Seemingly you never bothered to do that, which is your own choice and I respect that, but that probably has never worked in the interests of the site as a whole. Maybe you should take a 6 month break from being a staff member, see if you enjoy the extra liberty of posting style that it brings?
If you don’t notice the difference, maybe you’ve never been doing the staff thing right all along? This is verging on a personal attack, I don’t want it to, it IS personal criticism and constructive criticism I hope, but I’ll move on from that point onto…
Thing is I *do* enjoy the liberty of being non-staff, I am on every other site I post on, and I regularly take shit here I'd never think of taking elsewhere. Which, to a degree, is part of being staff & I accept that, but there's a limit. I actually took a 3-month break after the last "politics threads are killing the site mood" thread in December to see if there was anything in it (ok, & I had exam related stuff), but General stayed as dead as ever. That's the problem, we can't just mod stuff cos if we don't post there's usually nothing to mod, & staff have always contributed to debate. We should do it in a less abrasive way, but hey, tempers are frayed.
The more important point which is… if Maff is posting up all these film threads, why isn’t he on the staff? George organised the only site party for ages, only the site didn’t seem to recognise it as such, it didn’t beg to have him call it the T-party like it maybe should have, no it was decided that one might be organised later. These actions are what makes the site a community and they’re not being recognised in the eyes of the site as a whle. No wonder the membership is fragmenting/has fragmented. A change of staff might be the best thing that could happen?
We had Maff as an adept before the redesign, & that kind of fell by the wayside. It's something that's very likely to be discussed soon.
OI !!! STAFF PEOPLE READ THIS NOW!!!
Ask yourself if you contribute to the site as a staff member in a way that you couldn’t contribute as a normal member. I think Whistler would agree with me that neither of us had anything more to offer as staff. We did the right thing when we realised that. Tam went when she didn’t have the time to spare. Ask yourselves, are you hanging on to your pretty little badge because it looks cool, or because you are an active, positive, contributing member of the staff. If you’re not, hang it up, and make room for those who are in a position to do the good you used to.
Well no one else keeps the lynchmob employed.
As they've never tried to sort it out without chucking insults, they've can't say they know. If the few emails I've recieved were more like your posts and less like Romford at 1am, they'd certainly be more chance of it happening.
The key word here is mutual, I doubt that folks would fire off like they do if they thought they would get a decent level of respect first?
Well it came from the White Star Line. (Thinks of another Titanic reference, but gives up.)
And what DID happen to Mr Cameron’s Oscar ticket I don’t get that
