Has anyone actually proven women ARE better drivers? Or is it that they are just statistically less dangerous?

By that I mean that statistically women:

1) Drive Less at night, when accident rates are higher (probably due to the higher percentage of men in driving based jobs)
2) Drive fewer miles (so they are less exposed to situations where they could cause accidents)
3) Own less powerful cars, which cause less speed related accidents
4) Do less motorway driving, where, while accidents are less common, they are more likely to be serious

Depends on your definition of serious, as I don't think that this statement is true. The advantage of motorways is that cars are generally traveling in the same direction which means that compared to for example an 60 mph road the speed difference between two cars coming into contact are most likely going to be less.

If I drive @ 70mph and get hit by a car doing 90mph the speed difference (and therefore the force of the impact K = 1/2m * s (if I recall correctly)) is way lower than when two cars hit front on at 60 mph which is a speed difference of 120mph on impact. This means that although cars crashed on motorways normally look pretty serious the most deaths or serious injuries occure elsewhere (within towns involving people not in cars for example) or on roads without barriers.

Personally I find someone getting seriously injured or killed a lot more serious than a pile up of 5 cars which might be completely totalled but everyone walks out with minimal injuries. Sure the later will give you lots of traffic jams and is more annoying but wouldn't classify that as more serious myself

I think the idea is that women are less likely to have major accidents and therefore much less likely to make big claims on their insurance. Men may be better at the fiddly stuff like parking, but are probably more like to drive carelessly and have big accidents while women might get a few bumps and scrapes but aren't as likely to total their cars. You do have to wonder if it were the other way around whether there'd be insurance companies that cater just for men...

Was reading that a 17 year old girl pays half the insurance premiums on average than a 17 year old boy, and that women are advised not to add male relatives/partners/boyfriends etc as it will increase their premuims more than adding a female relative/partner/girlfriend etc.
