I agree with Desire, I also had different opinions on suicide until I had first hand experience of it.
On the issue of whether it is selfish, no I don't think it is. To look at my uncles suicide from an outsiders perspective then I guess they would say he was very selfish. He left behind a wife, a 15 year old son & three daughters under the age of 9; and seemingly he had nothing so wrong in his life that couldn't be helped or changed. From the outside he had quite a happy marriage, no major money troubles, a job he loved, beautiful happy children, brothers and sisters who loved him-yet there was something inside tearing him up. And as a family we were only aware of his pain through the letter he left-I can't and won't go into what was in it, suffice to say that my uncle was in pain I hope to god I never experience. He was not selfish, he took a course of action that was best for him-I do not see that as selfish.
Humans by their very nature do things to help themselves, it is only after millions of years of conditioning to believe that others come first that we do not show this egocentric nature all the time. Ultimately, from what was in the letter, my uncle truly believed that his family would be better off without him & that certainly he would be better off not on this earth; that is his opinion & judgement & who am I to question it? Just because our actions affect others doesn't mean that we should always put others above ourselves does it? I certainly do not believe it total aultruism! My philosophy is-until you stand in someones shoes then don't judge them.
