I have to say I find the first part of that post a bit harsh? 'Degrading of other peoples human rights'!? I think not.

Fair enough it may not be quite as informative as other papers, but for 50p or so, I'm not complaining. It also has decent tokens for money off things and of course....a wicked problem page (Try voicing it to your friends whilst drunk one night)

The News of the World is THE exemplar of paparazzi journalism in this country. It pays for photographers and journalists to invade the lives of anyone vaguely famous, or vaguely connected to someone vaguely famous. It will print 'kiss and tell' stories to titillate its readers at the expense of someone’s right to a private life. It has directly lead to a number of deaths through suicide. That's why I call it evil and why I would ask anyone not to buy it. In buying their rubbish you are funding their evil cause. [Anyone offended by my use of the word evil should be advised that I do so with my forked tongue planted firmly in someone’s cheek…]

Am I violating your human rights in doing this? Hardly. If I stalked you and then clubbed you on the head as you walked out of the Newsagents with the offending item, then I would. If I tried to ban it, then I would be infringing your human rights. By expressing my opinion I'm invoking my human rights, and harming no one else's.

As for the idea that my opinion or behaviour is some form of snobbery - hardly worth arguing against. Holding a differing opinion doesn't make me a snob. And if your suggesting this working class northern boy does not like the NotW because of some upper class snob-prejudice, then you're even further wide of the mark.

Well, if you read what Maff's definition of 'snobbery' is in the relevant thread then what your class is is irrelevant, isn't it? It's demeaning one set of values to the favour of another ie singing the praises of the Broadsheets while looking down your nose at the tabloids and its readership.

Whistler, I could never, and would never wish to, stop you reading whatever you like. I might, however, ask you to consider the repercussions.

I might not be a snob, but I know I come across as a self-opinionated, arrogant clump of earth at times. It's just my sense of humour/debating style. No offence was intended, for what it's worth.

No offence taken. I've actually enjoyed this little debate. Makes a change for me as I usually try and stear clear of them

There is nothing I could say about the merits of some papers and the perceived flaws of others that has not already been eloquently expressed.

On a sliding scale of best to worst in my opinion:

The Financial Times
The Guardian/Observer
The Independent
The Times
The Telegraph
The Mirror
The Express
The Sport
The Sun/News of the World
The Mail

*Whistler exits from the shabby hut he calls home, pulls on his flea biiten clothes and returns to the Master's house. He doffs his cap and asks his gracious employer for his weekly wage of tuppence before asking to be excused for his weekly half hour break.

He walks with a skip in his step to a local boy and with a beaming smile on his face uses his hard earned tuppence on his favourite paper The Sun, safe in the knowledge that Dear Deirdre will put a smile and laugh on his face*

I don't follow the news very much, it depresses me. I know I really should, but I'm happy in my own little world and I hate reading about stupid things that stupid people have done. My mum gets the independant, cept for Sundays when she gets the Observer, I'l flick through them when I forget why I have no faith in mankind. Tend to avoid article that have any real meaning anyway. *Totally ignorant of what's going on in the world*

I try to stay away from the slanted opinions of all the "news" papers. If I buy anything "newspapery" it tends to be the FT. At least currency and share values are factual and accurate. Back in my cynical student days I found most journalists are way too busy putting their view of things across to actually bother reporting the news

These days I don't have time to sift the news from the "stories" If I can catch BBC news 24 on the TV I'lll take a little of that or try to grab some of the BBC's news off the net. It's probably almost as biased as everyone elses, but at least I'm aware of that
