Apparently the dish was made with Bird eye chillies which aren't even that hot.

If it had been made with Scotch Bonnets or Dorset Nagas then I could have understood.

I ate a pickled Scotch bonnet once & couldn't speak for about 5 minutes afterward.

I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to spicy food. My sis will pile chillies into stuff she cooks for me and I will have steam coming out of my ears while she's merrily munching away.

Probably a good job I stay away from them, I've heard that spicy food can bring on labour!!

Where I used to work, the local chilli wagon sold a generic chilli that you could pep up by adding as many drops of their 500,000 scoville sauce as you wanted. 12 drops was apparantly "very hot". They sold it with 60 drops which was advertised as "Death by chilli".

Generally though, you pick chillies for their flavour, not just because of their heat.

BTW don't buy the extra hot chilli powder that comes in the big bags fom Asda. It is very hot but has an unpleasant bitter flavour that wrecks any dish that you try to cook.

Fresh chillies are always the way to go.

I suffer from a similar problem to your sister Kelly (Hi by the way). I cooked what I thought was quite a mild curry for my dad the other night. Within 3 seconds he was spitting the food out & reaching for the milk.

BTW Milk is a much better way to cool down over hot chillies as Capsaicin dissollves in the fat in milk but not in water.

Hottest thing I've ever tried; Suicide Wings at a chicken place in Calgary.
Set my eyes & then nose streaming, even my finger tips were burning....very Homer Simpson situation - sot much pain, but soooo goood mmmmmmmsuicide wings....
Never had anything since that came close, even in India.

Once ate an entire jar of chillies in an upmarket Indian restraunt. Not my fault at all. Damn things were addictive.

They weren't too bad going down ... but from then on came unpleasantness.

So my startlingly original advice is: don't eat a jar of chillies. Public service announcements are doubtless crying out for my services.
