I would have thought that the population of the UK got used to the CCTV cameras by now in all honestly. Of course the government should use them what they were meant for and not start using them to fine parking offences or littering, but still.
The problems with most of these measures are that they can be used for "good" and "evil" depending on who's behind the wheel. I honestly don't see the problem with things like biometric information, like an iris-scan, in travel documents. It makes it bloody hard to travel under an assumed identity and in our society I cannot really think of a reason under which you would need to travel under an assumed identity, however, for Chinese's people I can think of a couple. The same with email / phone dragnetting, plus if you cannot be bothered to encrypt your private email thinking that nobody can read it, you are sorely mistaken.
Just because something can be used for "evil" as well as for "good" doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. It does mean you have to be careful and carefully consider all the pros and cons.
