I think it will boil down to rights. Much like the Spider-man movie rights being with Sony, and Marvel now making movies in house. I have a feeling that Cartoon Network, or whichever channel aired Spectacular had fingers in that show.
After the Disney takeover, it was also innevitable that a studio so focused on animation was never going to subsidise a competing animation studio making a series out of one of their properties, unfortunately.
Its no coincidence that they also announced that there will be no second series of "Wolverine and the X-Men" either.
