This is probably the first year I've missed not putting a bet on

I only found out about the race this morning and I was at classes with Len so couldn't do anything about it.....

Oh well....

Nope not placed a bet this year , I must admit I don't like watching it now I always shudder when a horse doesn't make the jump

I have Guns 'N Roses II to win (One of my favourite bands ) with a £2 stake and then Carryonharry, Florida Pearl, More Than A Stroll and What's Up Boys at 50p each each-way.

Just picked the names I like

At work we've got a sweepstake going. We all drew names out of a hat, and I was hoping for Guns n' Roses II (I'm with Teresa on this one!), and freakilly that's what I got!!! I know it's the least favourite to win, but it's got such a cool name, and everyone at work couldn't believe that I didn't cheat to pick that one!

BTW, when does/did the Grand National start?

It starts a 3.45 and I've just discovered the joys of Internet gambling LOL

Got another few bets on: What's Up Boys to win, Adhoc to win, Carryonharry each way and what's Up Boys each way.

I didn't even realise it was this weekend till today anyway!! How up together with stuff am I??

Well one of mine came in second and I had him each way so I won something

I feel the same way. I know it is a lot safer now than it used to be but I still associate the Grand National with horses getting hurt and being put down.

You're the only person I know who backed it! There didn't seem to be anyone at all cheering at the course.

I stuck a fiver each way on Mely Moss at one of those course side cowboy bookies. Was looking good for a £30 win until it fell near the end

At least it didn't rain this year though

We did an office sweepstake too. A couple of the guys manged to randomly draw appropriate ones - Bruce the smoothie got 'Supreme Charm', Harry got 'Carryonharry'. I got 'Celibate'

So where did Guns n' Roses II come? Did he live up to expectations and fall before the first hurdle?

Out of forty horses that lined up at The Grand National eleven finished the race , and two horse's The Last Fling and Manx Magic died as a direct result of this race.

I found it strange that the newspapers seemed to ignore the 2 deaths this year. Last Fling especially had a good run during the majority of the race and it was very sad that he wasn't too far from the end when he stumbled after a jump

I did feel that the winning jockey was stripped a bit of his glory when the horses owner reminded him someone else would have been riding the horse if he hadn't broke his leg that week. That's assuming the horse would have still won with the original jockey (he could have rode the horse on a different line etc and lost!)

This must be the first year I haven't placed a bet, I did pick a few horses just for my own amusement but 2 of them fell at the first jump anyway. I'm not a sporty person and this was reflected in my announcing before the race started that I would be happy if any of the grey horses won
