Well, they did get a lot better once they started releasing albums. Kandy Pop was the song that got me into them. I rememer watching them on TOTP thinking "what is this tripe?" halfway way through I thought, actually it's OK really, the next day I went out & bought it.
by Milky
Think I'll comment on the bands mentioned first...
Bis - I remember 'Kandy Pop'..not one of my fave tunes though so i never checked out anything else by them.
Bands you think others should know of
Again, hopefully this one is pretty self-explanatory; if there's a band you absolutely love that nobody else; or at least, not enough people - seem to have heard of, here's the place to get some recommendations in.
Please please please remember to try and put a description (no matter how brief) of the type of music though - those who lean towards classical for example probably won't want to be listening to the death metal band you just recommended now will they?
It'd be handy if you could include some songs to try out for each band as well - though that's not a prerequisite
Anyhoo, as ever I'll kick things off with a couple (though by no means all the bands I'd like to recommend);
Filter (Alternative rock, occasionally veering into light industrial)
- The Best Things
- Where Do We Go From Here?
- Take A Picture
- Hey Man Nice Shot
- Columind
A Perfect Circle (Progressive rock with a smattering of grunge)
- Three Libras
- Magdalena
- Orestes
- Judith
- The Hollow
Pantera (Pure unadulterated hard 'n' loud metal )
- Walk
- This Love
- Domination
- Five Minutes Alone
- Cowboys From Hell
Those'll do for now but there's a lot more to come

Whoops, have accidentally ordered the lost Horizons album twice. Doh nevermind, someone will have a nice Chrissy pressie.

Lemon Jelly
Anyway, just a quck note to say that Lemmon Jelly are tanfastic Go Buy.
Ah, Bis! Such fond memories. Up there with Kenickie in my opinion.
As for Trust Company, yeah, I had a good mosh at the gig. Couldn't tell you what a single one of their songs is called. Or describe them really. But no, Ethan, I haven't got sick of you mentioning them. Actually, more amuzed.
Anyway, for what it's worth, if you like rock music and haven't heard of the following (which you probably have) then you need to check them out:
Jimmy Eat World
Their current Eponymous CD (previously released as Bleed American, before three plane crashs...) is just the bomb. Journo types have referred to it as being part of Emo, but personally I think it sounds like no one else, equal parts ass-kicking rock chunes and angelic lyrics to melt the hardest heart.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
The new Jesus And Mary Chain. If you don't know who they are then you need to buy Pshycho Candy and Honey's Dead NOW! Think Dinosaur Jr, think My Bloody Valentine, think just the sexiest rock and/or roll in the world.
The Melvins
They just kick ass. Yours, mine, whoever wants some. Hard as nails with a skin job and num chucks.
The more obscure stuff I love are either unsigned bands (Blue Dog, Junction, Zed...) or defunct (Plastic Fantastic, Orlando, Belvedere Kane...).
And, although not really rock, Doves deserve a mention because they are sex on toast. Simply the most beautiful music you'll hear this side of Massive Attack or P.J.Harvey.
Can I know go into a long list of essential bands everyone should own at least one album by? Can I?

I love Jimmy Eat World. Still not got round to seeing them live 'cos the ex would never take me I will definitely see them next time they tour 'tho.

Jimmy Eat World
And here was me thinking i was the only Aimee Mann fan i knew. Been a huge fan since her first album (about 10yrs ago i guess) and i'm getting the new one for Christmas
I'll start by seconding some bands already mentioned.
Matchbox Twenty - Youself or someone like you is one of my fave albums. Push is a great track, though i think my fave song is Kody.
Air - Moon Safari is a great album.
Jimmy Eat World - A Praise Chorus is my favourite song. Bleed American is good but so are their other albums, especially Static Prevails. Rockstar is really good. And Teresa, they're great live. i'd definitely recommend trying to go and see them next time they tour.
And i'd suggest Five for Fighting. They sound a bit like the Counting Crows. Easy Tonight and Superman are my fave songs, but the whole album, America Town is great.
And the Goo Goo Dolls. every one of their albums. Best trcks, Iris, Broadway and Black Balloon from 'Dizzy up the Girl' and Here is Gone from their latest album 'Gutterflower'

Nah, Kenickie were much better. Seriously, one of my favourite ever bands.. Not that I've anything against Bis - the time I saw them live may well make it into my top gigs post.

Hmm, didn't like 'Spread Your Love' at all. How does it compare to their other stuff?
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
You liked Orlando?? I saw them live twice, supporting Kenickie, and they were dreadful.
Orlando
I find them incredibly dull. But there you go.
And, although not really rock, Doves deserve a mention because they are sex on toast.
Yep sure Start a new thread with them on and then other folks can add their lists Some of us may chuckle quietly at the list, but I dare say they'll be the ones too embarrassed to post their own lists

If you liked that then try 'Figure 8' (A bit slower) or 'Finally', that is the end track on the album and it's a good one to do it with.
by Spikeo
Only heard Downfall by them (which I liked btw) - any other recommended songs?
Katie -
Agreed with Milky though 'The Music' are a good band, can't help but think that they look like a bunch of scouser scallys (I have no idea where they are actually from though)
Not strictly a band, but if you are into the more classical style ballads, try Beverley Craven. Her voice is exquisite and the music is all very personal and emotional. I've seen her live as well, which was excellent.
Songs I would recommend: Listen to the Rain, Love Scenes and Promise Me.

Everyone I've met who saw them at Reading Festival said they were the highlight. Absolutely kick ass. But next time they're over here I promise to take you along.

The rest of their stuff is a lot broodier, especially the fantastic 'Whatever Happened To My Rock And Roll (Punk Song)'. Spread your Love is a lot bouncier, slightly poppier than the rest of their stuff. Quite like it myself, partly for the slightly bluer version doing the rounds. Partly for one when they played it at Reading and a lovely young lady climbed up on stage in her bra and knickers and started dancing about. No one tried to stop her...

And Orlando rocked! Got the singles and the album. I was heavily into Romo at the time and did the whole make-up and clothes stuff.
And you don't like Doves? Dan, you're letting me down, man. Listen, at T-Party, we'll go for a .. smoke .. and then I'll play you Lost Souls. If you still think it's dull then I'll just have to give up on you.
Gash

Mr. Zippy

Bigwig

They played at a house party I went to once in a very small flat above a fancy dress hire shop

Whoops, nearly forgot
Sing-Sing
The guitarist from Lush & a singer I can't remember.
Kind of laid back pop (in the pure sense) sometimes sounding a little Morcheebay.
Can't recall any song titles, but it's more of a "listen to the album" kind of thing anyway.

Gabba Gabba HEY!! It is nice to know it isn't only me out there. Have been spreading the gospel for a while, and managed to get them sold out in my town's record stores once
by Tycho
(recommends)
Helen Love - Bubblegum Punk Pop
Would also like to recommend Cake , Especially their version of "I will survive", which is just the best *ever*... The one that made it quite big here was "Going the Distance", Mark and Lard used to play it a lot. My other fave is "Short Skirt/Long Jacket". Unfortunately, whenever I've seen their albums in town, they've looked quite expensive to my poor cash-strapped pocket...
Finch, definitely. Saw them with New Found Glory last year and they put on an absolutely amazing show. Great guys with great songs
Recommended songs: Letters To You, Grey Matter, Post Script, and What it is to Burn
Also, they're getting a bit more well-known these days but The Distillers are still on my list of bands not getting enough recognition.
Recommended songs: The Young Crazed Peeling, City of Angels, and Red Carpet Rebellion

Wow, Spikeo you have really good musical taste!
Lacuna Coil are a really good band. They're sort of gothic and mellow, Cristina Scabbia the singer has a fantastic voice. I recommend "Falling" and "Stars" by Lacuna Coil, but all their other songs are cool too.
Less Than Jake are my all time fave band. They're sorta punky ska. "All my best friends are metal heads" is a classic, as are "Gainesville rock city" "History of a boring town" and "Help save the youth of America from exploding".
I also highly recommend:
Sisters of Mercy - "Temple of love", "I was wrong" and "This Corrosion" - a fantastic gothic band.
Goo Goo Dolls - "Iris", "Here is gone" and "Big Machine" - lovely relaxing, mellow rock music.
Cradle of Filth - "Hallowed be thy name", "Her Ghost in the Fog" and "Cruelty brought thee orchids" - another of my fave bands, CoF are death/extreme metal with gothic influences

Lacuna Coil are brilliant, makes me wish I'd reccomended them myself. Not sure about "Stars" though, since it is a cover, but Senzafine is an excellent song
