it depends on my mood. Sometimes a lyric can mean nothing to me at one time but then at other times, it can really mean something.

I know, wrong gender but the sentiments still the same.

Every so often there comes along an artist so inspired, so insightful that I feel they have truly connected with my own life. They demonstrate such powerful empathic coincidence that it is as if they have turned over the pile of detritus of my life and come up with a lyric that, not only relates to me, but also touches my inner being. Such a song is being played on MTV2 at the moment and I feel the need to share these words with you:

A Fish song with Sam Brown, entitled Just Good Friends struck a particularly strong chord from the moment I first heard it. It was just terribly accurate:

I've yet to think of any dead cheery lyrics to put down here, but a set of lyrcis that I can think of at this point in time would be:

"Push" by Matchbox Twenty.

The song is about a man being used and pushed around and taken for granted by his girlfriend. It is about relationships. But for me, it strikes a chord through my teen years, and the way my dad treated me, like i was nothing. The whole song just my song to a tee.

This always makes me feel a little better when I'm feeling bad.

My first exposure to non pop music and that led me to explore other genres was when I heard this...

Erm, 'shed' loads...

My quote is from a Depeche Mode song that never stops giving me the kick up the posterior that I regularly need. In fact, there's pretty much the whole Depeche Mode back catalogue. And The Smiths'. Particularly fond of a Magnetic Fields song from their 69 Love Songs album (All My Little Words). Radiohead's Just is another good example.

And loads more, although I will say that a song doesn't have to have great lyrics to be great. I've been listening to One By One a lot recently and, bar one or two songs, the lyrics aren't amazing. Or necessarily meaningful (to me) yet it is on almost constant play on my stereo. Same goes for the two Doves albums.

Anyway, as I said there are .. a lot .. of songs with lyrics that always cut deep into me. And like most of the above, they're pretty depressing. I've tried to think of one that isn't all doom and gloom and this was the best I could think of...

Lots of Joni Mitchell seems to describe my life. One that I keep coming back to is "Cactus Tree" - about a women who has many men who love her, and who loves many men in return, but

This is the one song I identify with most, whatever other songs I identify with transiently. And "The Last Time I saw Richard" -
