What bugs me is when I play something to someone and they hate it, but then a year later when it's popular they decide it's the best thing ever! And then of course when they become mainstream to keep their popularity. that sucks too

If you'd never heard of her (or presumably the album), how did you know Avril was robbed? Since she went on to clean up at the Grammy's, including Best Album period, maybe she deserved it?

Well, as you pointed out, I haven't heard Norah's album so I can't comment on how good it is. But, that said, 'Let Go' has been in the top ten of the UK album charts for some months now so quite a few people, other than me, think it's of high quality.
Personally, I'd say Ms Lavigne is quite fun but her album is nowhere near being in the same class as 'Come Away With Me'

Thus I feel fully justified in making that statement. However how she looks and her actual music are completely seperate things, I'm not saying that her music is bad, just that her record sales have a lot to do with who she is and how she looks made up on the album cover.

More than that, isn't the implication then that for a musician to have credibility, they must also be unattractive and isn't that just as superficial in reverse?
Didn't buy the album, didn't like the songs I've heard enough to warrant purchasing it, I'm not saying that she doesn't have a good voice, just that I didn't like her songs particularly. I would agree though that it is incredibly over exposed, possibly because she's pretty, and is Ravi Shankar's daughter

Got the album last summer and played it solidly for quite a while. It's a curious blend of country music and jazz, not exactly like anything else I've heard, and she has a typical jazz voice although a little gentler than the likes of Billie Holiday.
Unfortunately, it would now appear the album has become the musical equivalent of Captain Corelli's Mandolin and is hideously overexposed.
Or it might collapse because of the lack of hype, or it might do incredibly well on the merit of its content. Like I said, it's very hard to seperate the why's of musical success. But it's sure fun talking about it

I saw an interview with her recently where she said basically the same... 'The record's sold a million copies, we recouped... why do we need to keep hyping it.'

Everyone has an image though. Even steadfastly resisting an image is an image.
It's just that it's incredibly hard to seperate the music from the image, once the image is included in the equation. Kind of like "absense of evidence is not evidence of absense" sort of thing.
This album has become a coffee-table, must have, yuppie album much like Dido for example. However, on the plus side, I like it and bought it and you didn't like it and didn't so something is still working right in the world.
