... and your point is...?
Well this 'dirty old man' saw her last night and she absolutely rocked!!! Even better than last year's Astoria gig.
Inc and Rally are in for a treat tonight!!

Well, me and Spike saw Avril again last night at the Brixton Academy and we had Shibs and Miss Edith in tow this time.
What a fantastic gig! As good, if not better, than the Astoria gig back in November. Although the set was almost identical (and with only one album under her belt, it wasn't gonna change much), it was a much more polished performance and she seemed to feed off the audience more this time and encourage their participation. This time, she even got three people up from the crowd to help her belt out 'Complicated' which was a nice touch.
And even though I wasn't at the front this time, we still had an excellent view from the sides.
The only slight downside of the evening was the rugby scrum to buy merchandise at the end. I sweated more, and got crushed more, in those twenty minutes than I did while at the front for the Astoria gig. And there was a psychotic bloke behind the table, selling the stuff, who got so stressed and wound up with one customer he was swearing and shouting at him. Eventually, he was told to leave for fear of upsetting more people.
Anyway, inspite of that, it was great night and I can't wait for the next one!!

Well...
For what it was, it was quite fun. It's amazing how much energy those 12 year olds can put into pushing towards the stage when they put their mind to it.
However, being completely honest, it was rock music for beginners. A gig with training wheels if you like.
Whilst the stand out tracks from the album went over well and got a good audience response, too many of the other songs are mid-paced without the energy to keep the crowd going. The problem with touring on the back of one album is the inability to cherrypick material.
Ms Lavigne can sing quite nicely but she's too young to have developed much in the way of stagecraft and lacks the swagger of a genuine teenage rebel. The 'band' has absolutely zero presence and no noticeable balls at all.
On the plus side, the bar afterwards was unbelievably empty as the fans went home with mum.
For all of that, with the exception of possibly the worst version of 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' this side of the busker at Euston, the music was ok and as I said at the start, it was fun.

I had a really good time in a bouncy castle kinda way. I didn't intend to end up at the front but with an audience of such short stature, it's like big stones settling to the bottom of a river bed. The audience was good natured with everyone singing along - not much moshing potential as everyone was squeezed in... felt a bit like being burried under a truck load of soft toys.
In the end I went home with a big grin and hope the next time she tours she'll still be playing smaller venues like the Academy.
Yup, she did... which caused some amusing banter amongst the "grown ups" around us (i.e. those over 5 foot)

Ok, so she had this dream audience and didn't really take control and play it (in fact she looked a bit taken aback at times)... but if she tours a lot then she should get it. Same with the band - takes a while to really gel.

this is what i get for my now *very* sporadic checks of T21 (hangs head in shame)...
i too was at the academy on the wednesday, and having had my excitment dwindle slowly over the months leading up to the show (& taking a huge knock when i heard that chop suey cover) i can now say i was pleasantly surprised.
having got to the front disturbingly easily, although as mentioned this was probably due to the make up of the crowd, there were two things i noticed that havent been mentioned...
1) i'm *positive* she was lip-synching during I Don't Give, and i'm pretty sure about Sk8er Boi, though on that i can't be certain..
2) that guy that tried to grope her when she invited him up on stage! i was really impressed with the way both she and the security handled it tho
anyone else have a view on either of those?

Don't know about the lip-synching but they definitely had pre-recorded backing vocals playing which bugged the hell out of me.
Like Inc said, they may well have played pre-recorded backing vocals. But I certainly don't think she was lip-synching on the Tuesday, certainly not to 'I Don't Give'. Would have been very clever if she had seeing as she adapted the lyrics by replacing the word 'damn' with a certain four letter word beginning with 's' and, towards the end, with a four letter expletive beginning with 'f'. It was just too 'spontaneous' to have been pre-recorded.

And she certainly was singing live all the way through the Astoria gig back in November.
i was well aware of this on other songs, but like i said i was *positive* it was lip-synching during "I Don't Give" becasue being where i was i was close enough both to see her lips & when she stepped forward, hear her voice without need of the mike. There was none of this lyric swapping that you mentioned on wednesday, and as a result i was able to see a section during one of the choruses where she got lost & repeated "i dont give a damn, i dont give a damn..." one too many times then started to sing the wrong verse before realising her error & catching up with the sound that was coming over the speakers...

after that incident i must say i was watching out for further evidence & didnt see any, but i'm as sure as i can be that what she was singing during that one song was not what we could hear coming out over the sound system
