Beth Orton - Royal Albert Hall
Wow. How do you describe something that good? How do you convey in words the sheer musicality of the performance last night?
Accompanied by her full band with violins, cello, double bass and ‘box’ all present and correct, the Royal Albert Hall was the perfect venue with its almost flawless acoustics. Every heartbreaking nuance was clearly audible at all times and rising above it at all times was a masterful vocal performance.
At times strident, then breathless and fragile, the overall effect was to paint a canvas of sound conveying perfectly a particular sense of melancholy but also a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty to be found in these moments of pain and suffering.
Playing for a tad under two hours, she drew mostly from Daybreaker and Central Reservation covering most of the stand out tracks from her three albums to date.
Stand out songs for me were ‘Free to believe’, ‘This one’s going to bruise’ and in a final mini encore, alone on stage with a guitar after some of the audience had started to leave, ‘Wish I never saw the Sunshine’.
This was the last date of a year long tour but if you are a fan, move heaven and earth to see her next time she tours.
