My apologises, having just caught Bob Geldof on Jonathan Ross via BBC3 this evening, you are correct. I had assumed that everything for the concerts were being donated for "free use" as per Live Aid and that the text money was being used for fundraising (which is how the Live Aid concert 20 years ago was run )
by Kneon Light
(quotes)
I was under the impression that this was NOT a fundraising event. The money from the concerts is going to cover the costs of the concerts. The idea is to exert political pressure on the countries at the G8 summit rather than raise funds (hence Live 8 rather than Live AID).
However, Bob Geldof said that this time around they "don't want your money" and that "millions are needed to organise the gigs" and that rather than putting a particular entry figure on the cost of tickets, they are trying to make it fairer by having people enter via text. Therefore the text money will be used to cover this cost. I can only assume that they would hope to make more, as I imagine the texting has/will be quite high, so surely they can't be risking less than break even on gig costs.
You put it better than I did the first time around, the detracting is unnecessary
As the concerts are aimed at these 8 countries I would have thought it more important to have bands/singers from these countries rather than from Africa. It is a shame (imho) that the lack of African artists is being highlighted and detracting from what is a fantastic idea to put pressure on the countries at the G8 summit.
From the interview they were discussing some bands playing in other countries that were indicated as being local, or well known in the respective country.
During the interview, he mentioned that 20 years ago there was no chance of opening the eyes of the politicians of so many countries, and that Live Aid was purely a fundraising and awareness campaign.
This time around they are hoping to "influence" the decision of the eight main countries that are participating in the debate. Obviously this is as well as raising public awareness on a new generation.

Not had anything either.
Nope, I didn't get any either.
I didn't get any either. To be honest, I'm not that bothered, and I've gone right off Live 8 and cancelling world debt (god I sound so harsh) since I found out that most of the countries wouldn't be so poor if their leaders have them some money, because the leaders of these countries are stinking rich, and by giving money to these countries isn't helping, it's just putting money into rich mens pockets.
Saying that, I still totally agree the debt should be cancelled, once they have sorted out the corruption in these countries.

My feelings exactly.

The money, in this case goes to Aid Organisations - which include organisations such as Christian Aid, Oxfam, Red Cross.etc..which actually distribute the aid locally to the peolple who need it..governments don't get the money in theses cases..and its a bad generalisation to say that ALL African governments are bad governments!
Oh no, I didn't say that all African governments were bad, I just said that most of them are. I just believe that giving money funds the problem as much as it solves it.
my bad...but i agree money causes probs..so thats why i agree with the aid angencies i mentioned as they tend to dig wells..buy seeds for planting..provide tools etc..much better way to get people back on their feet..provinding food is good in the short term too..but providing the means to grow and tend their own crops is much better

Wise words...
I'd like to know what the organisers are smoking to make them think that 5.5 billion people (ie over 80% of the world's population) is going to watch this. Are they insane?
I think it will be well below a billion watching it, Id imagine a large pecentage of TV owning people wont even be watching it.

I wont be for a start.
Me neither. The whole crusade, from Richard Curtis's smug love letter to Gordon Brown, Girl in a Cafe, to Geldolf kissing Bush's bum, is seriously irritating me now. All of them are wilfully blind to the fact that powerful capitalists are the cause of the problem, not the solution. So long as they rely on powerful men to act against their own interests all the pop concerts in the world won't make a blind bit of difference. The establishment are using this safe middle class handwringing to bury genuine opposition. It's part of the problem.
