The job they did of sealing the box was more geared to keeping angel in rather than keeping water out, so I would have expected the box to have flooded and so balance the pressure.

Well, i'm not exactly a physicist, but watching that season finale, that box went a heck of a long way down before it hit the ocean floor.. and over a period of two or three months of it being down there, surely the immense water pressure would buckle the metal?.. therefore eventually causing any cables to snap?. I'm sure someone will enlighten me.
Real-world underwater engineers are quite capable of constructing pressurised boxes capable of withstanding immense pressures (eg submarines) Connor and Thingie weren't engineers, and did a rushed job, so the odds of the box being waterproof are pretty slim, one of the welds will go if nothing else.
