Wow - I didn't even know there WAS a pilot for Angel!?!? I had always assumed that Joss simply got the go-ahead based on the success of Buffy.

I wonder if anyone else knows more? I'll set this to be a recommended pick to draw attentio to it as I'm sure everyone here will be interested in this story

I thought the same as Mon. Joss did the cheap, short pilot for Buffy to sell the idea to the studio wheras he didn't have to do that with Angel, did he?

Maybe this is a version with bits that were subsequently edited out later for broadcast...

That was my reaction too but I thought I'd check. I've also asked for more details...

As far as i'm aware, there isn't an "unaired" pilot. As previously mentioned, there is the "introductory" promo that is basically DB as Angel talking about it ("It started with a girl" ). That can be found on one of the DVD's, i think season one (one of the special features) but i haven't heard of an unaired pilot at all.

I know there was something talked about at the very beginning that the people at the WB weren't happy about an episode of Angel, that it was too dark, and production had to be shut down for a couple of weeks to re-do or re-shoot, so maybe that is what your friend is alluding to

The only possibilities I can think off are the original script for 1.1 which was a bit different to the actual 1.1, or "Corrupt" which was supposed to be episode 1.2 but got junked for being too dark.

I think psyche has scripts for both of those, go looking for a German site called "studies in words".

Corrupt was the original episode 2, that was shut down a couple of days into production on account of the crack whores. The character of Kate was originally a drug-addict deep-cover cop on a bloodsoaked vengeance rampage. The shooting script is around, but I didn't think any of it was really filmed. If it was, then that could be it.

There's also a draft script of an unshot version of the pilot, where Whistler from Becoming is in the Doyle role, but it's pretty much the same.

I don't know anything about unaired episodes. There may have been an ep that was delayed - like Earshot in S3 Buffy - but I can't think of anything else.

I was just about to post about that too, but got sidetracked actually reading the script for 'Corrupt', which is interesting.

I think its something to do wirth what Keeny mentioned...the only 'unaired pilot' thing was the promo for the WB. I don't think they ever made a pilot in the same way that they did for Buffy.

I would have liked to have Whistler in Angel at least once...not sure if he would have been as good as Doyle though...

Me too, he was the one who brought Angel back from being a homeless person etc and you never see him again. I thought when they made Angel he'd be in it lots.
