Ok, here's the information we have:
Gets soul back.
Follows Darla, Dru and Spike to China shortly after that, and tries to rejoin them, but can't kill a baby (in 'Fool for Love'/'Darla', is it 1905 or something?)
Goes to America. Is in Montana during the depression. ('City of')
Nothing about what he's up to for the next 30 years or so, then of course we see him in LA in the 50s ('Are you now or have you ever been?')
So I guess it's more like, he just happened to be in Vegas at the time, drinking away his sorrows or something.
And then, nothing til Whistler, which is '95?
None of this exactly contradicts what we've been told before, but no, I don't buy it either. Then again, I didn't think there was a whole lot to like in that episode..

Angel: "Oh, now I remember that room! Elvis and Pricilla's wedding reception, 1967. Yes! Alright. It's not like I was, you know, really invited. They just put me near the dais. I think somebody thought I was in the band. Probably because I was all drunk and surly. They had these little fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches."
So just how long had Angel been all "washed out, tortured soul guy" when he was recruited by Whistler just before Buffy was called? I thought he got his sould bakc like 100 or so years ago, and had been brooding in solitude ever since, but now it turns out he put his brooding on hold to go to Elvis' wedding!?!?!
