I liked 5 and 6. As you say, it went a bit off the boil after that (apart from the first ep of series 7 with Ace Rimmer in ).
Red Dwarf - Best season?
Now, for me, the series started to go off the boil in the last couple of seasons when Grant and Naylor had their spat and went their separate ways.
But I still reckon the best seasons were 2 and 3. When the show was more about a comedy that happened to be set in space than the latter seasons which seemed to be more about a sci-fi show that happened to be a comedy.
And Clare Grogan shall always be Kochanski!!!

Yeah, i agree - the last couple of series have been nowhere near as good which has been a pity
I'm not sure which is my all-time favrouite season but the earlier seasons i think are generally better
Btw, does anyone know any info on the Red Dwarf movie that they were supposed to be making???

Well i think series 2 was the peak, season 3 was close but it was a slow downward spiral after that to laughless depths of season 8 (ok Cassandra wasnt bad)
The movie BTW is supposed to be filming now, and plagued with constant script rewrites, last i heard Danyy John Jules (the cat) has walked out in protest over how his character was treated.

Yep, the last season, when they rediscovered Red Dwarf which had it's full compliment of crew back on it spoiled the show for me. The whole point was that Lister was the last human alive and the one thing that kept him going was his relationship with Rimmer. I think either Craig Charles or Chris Barrie commented that the early seasons of RD were like The Likely Lads in space. Some of the best episodes were the ones almost entirely centered on Rimmer and Lister in their bunk room swapping barbs or stories. One example is the excellent 'Marooned' from S3which went to prove that you don't need a lot of effects or characters to make a truly funny story.
In the latter seasons, all this repartee was traded for better special effects and tampering with the show's dynamic. I may be being picky, but substituting the hologram Rimmer for the 're-animated' human version just didn't seem right. The show tried to become too complicated where the simpler formula of the earlier seasons worked much, much better.
Anyway, I'll hand the floor back over to you......

tut tut tut. Now what way is that to act on your first day on the new site? Be nice to the members (and the staff!)
All were good but for different reasons. Series 8 was the better in terms of the show being made since they actually had a budget!
Best episode is from series 6, Gunmen of the apocalypse.
I have almost all the episodes on my HDD. Just missing three now....

It couldn't stand still though. The increasing popularity of the show, and the demands of them upstairs blah blah blah meant that it had to change. Plus, maybe in some ways it's good that the show didn't get stuck in a rut, and the way that each series is different means that it's going to appeal to lots of people, and different people are going to like different things.
Anyway. Which is your favourite book?
Two & three were clearly the best but I do like the last ep in season 5. Back to reality was a masterpiece.
Oh, & yes, Clare Grogan is the only Kochanski.

Have to agree with the general opinions here and say that the first 2 series were my faves!!! I hated 8 though. they ruined my love for the show!!! i don't think 7 was that bad. loved the Rimmer song, but it's not as good as Tongue Tied from series 2.
And am i the only one who actually prefered Chole Annett as Kochanski? i really didn't like Clare Grogan!!

yeah i agree the last 2 got boring after half way through series 7 when rimmer left. but all the other seasons mainly 2-6 were great, and the backwards episode has the be one of the funniest things i've ever seen.
Series 1,2 and 3 definitely the best.
I havent watched the last couple of series because I was so disappointed with series 6.
I think they just tried to be too clever - but progress brings change - and I'm sure there are people out there who love series 8 - aren't there???
The outakes video is pretty hilarious - I enjoy watching that!

I personally think that series 1 is the best. Series 8 was marginally better than series 7, but they were both Not Bad at best.
Favourite episodes: Confidence & Paranoia, Me^2, Polymorph, White Hole, Demons & Angels ......

Sorry But Clare Grogan is the only Kochanski; anyone else is a pale imitation.

Everything after The Rimmer Song didn't happen and you can't make me remember them!
Best episode was the Planet Potters, which was clearly written after Grant Naylor had spent a night watching me on the baize.
As for the books, I gave up on them after 'Better Than Life’, as they just seemed like pasted together scripts from the TV show, with no originality.
Seasons 3 and 4 were the best. Time Slides, Polymorph, White Hole and Justice zone were all excellent. I really didnt like the the last few series they just didnt have the same atmosphere about them. oh and Claire Grogan was a way better Kochnaski!!
No, your not, I hated her Evil child of hell who can't act to save her life!! Chloe Annett = much better, funnier, sexier (i know i'm a woman before anyone says anything.......Hoppy Toad!!!) She was just in the wrong series, if she'd have been in the earlier ones you lot would have loved her!!

Anyway, *deep breaths* now that my little rant is over, i liked the first three series best, couldn't pick a best one!! impossible!! but my fave ep has to be "Back to Reality" when the four of them are stood in that alley with the gun!! it's ace!! and "OH MY GOD!!" Danny John Jules' Hair!! hehe!!
DDB xx
I love Red Dwarf, not very good at episode names but DDB, if that was the ep that also included the Despair Squid then that is a brilliant ep! Dwayne Dibbly *rolls on the floor laughing*
I liked the earlier episodes much better than the later ones, but I did enjoy the Gunmen of the Apocalypse.
