OK,

Freelance made me think of a guy travelling round in his ship offering services to other planets/races. Could be negotiating type stuff or advice on technical things.

Grey Edge made me think of an area in space that little is known about, prolly coz no one has travelled there yet. No one knows what lies ahead of it or even if it could be the end of space (hey we once thought the world was flat!)

The Dark Grey Line is a fleet of ships that are all dark grey. Very prestigious fleet that people aspire to work on.

That any good? Just first things that popped into my head.

makes me think of a bounty hunter

Grey Edge:
edge of space, perhaps a sort of entrance to another dimension

The Dark Grey Line:
puts me in mind of The Thin Blue Line...sorta like a band of resistance fighters

That would be someone who is a hired assasin, travels to different worlds & takes contracts to 'remove' people for a price. They live in the shadows & are very normal looking, so normal that your glance would slide straight past them... which is what they want.

To me that conjures up the dusk or dawn line in the distance on a planet. Perhaps this planet always has a dark side & a daylight side & the grey edge is almost tangible barrier between the two sides of the world & the two very different cultures.

The Dark Grey Line:

The thing that hits me about this is the menacing tone that I read the phrase with. It is the only thing that distinguishes people of a certain class from all the rest. People who have the Dark Grey Line running from the outer corner of their left eye towards their ear then diving down towards the corner of their mouth are better than anyone else. They are rumoured to have abilities but no one has seen these abilities in years. Perhaps they have been lost with the generations of joining with 'normals' but no one has ever dared risk it.


Sorry Mon, they have turned more into book jackets that impressions about the phrase!

Freelance: mercenaries and bounty hunters.
Grey edge: alien infiltration and conspiracy!
The Dark Grey Line: a last ditch, beleaguered defensive line thrown up by an armoured unit or a fleet of some sort.

Not a lot really. Erm, the shady bit between things being black and white. Maybe a dodgy name for a way of achieving FTL travel in one of the genres naffer writer's books.

Actually, space does have a finite limit. If we accept the big bang model for the creation of the universe and all the other aspects of physics that the science is currently based on then we have three facts:

1) The Universe started from a singular point
2) It has been expanding at the speed of light
3) It has been expanding for a finite time.

Given this, there is nothing beyond the speed of light multiplied by the age of the universe from the point where the big bang took place. However, as matter cannot travel at the speed of light, and nothing can travel faster, it is impossible to actual reach such a place.

Just thought I'd mention that...

Y'know, I'm going to be up all night thinking about that one!
