Received the complete series R1 DVD boxset on Friday.
Apparently the release date is 9 December...

Was expecting to be disappointed after the scathing reviews here and other places....

I wasn't.

I was initially weirded out by the outfits, weaponry and...uh...horses.....but it lives up to it's concept as a western in space & does so very well.

Firefly is ......an oddity...
The DVD set has the episodes in the intended rather than broadcast sequence, so I'm sure it made more sense to me than most of those who saw it on TV.
Watching the episodes they appeared to be fairly slowly paced, kinda like a western drawl.
Then it's over and you feel it couldn't have lasted longer than an episode of 2 Guys & a Girl....weird...
On 2 occasions I actully checked the couter on the DVD player, surely enough 43 minutes had passed....

After the first viewing I'd have to say my favourites so far are Serenity 1 & 2, Ariel and Objects in Space.
Objects in Space was by far the best, and in some ways the freakiest, though not half as freaky as Joss Whedon's philosophical musings in the episode's commentary.

Quality packaging Each DVD came in it's own 1/2 thickness DVD case.
The set it is anamorphic 1.78:1
Fox needs to fix their DVD menu systems
on 24 S1 they very sensibly set it up so that if you started the 1st episode on a DVD it would play all of them.
Not so with S2 or Firefly...
You get a main menu where you can select an episode.
Then you get the episode menu.
Then you get to watch the episode
Then when it's over you get back to the episode menu and have to select the main menu to select the next episode....
Fortunately, as with 24 S2, you're so focused on getting to see the next episode you don't really care how annoying the menu system is.
On this point Fox could learn a lot from WB and their B5 releases...
