Looks like the old rumours of WB not wanting Smallville and the next Superman film to be around at the same time for fear of the formers (probably contradictory) interpretation of the story to damage the success of the latter.

Whilst Tom Welling had previously refuted the idea of playing the Superman on the big screen it looks like the disastrous casting process has left the studio reconsidering.

In a recent interview Tom said that if the next year was the last for Smallville, playing Clark on film would be a good way to continue it, and the studio and new director is seriously considering the possibility.

Question: how can the studio be considering the possibility when they know the show is one of the hightest rated, and contracts are in place for several more years, unless they are contemplating pulling the plug early in order to expedite a much more lucrative film (trilogy?).
