Still, I'm not overly on tenterhooks to see this new series anyway, what with a new cast and all (and possibly guest spots from Anderson on ice). Mind you, I probably felt the same about 'Deep Space Nine'...

I'm going to wait and see, myself- though I'm a little dubious, they have some VERY big shoes to fill.
As for Anderson on ice, the premiere of SG-1 season 8 is being shown the week before, so I think we can assume that O'Neill's problem will be rectified in the Season opener.

From comments I've heard here and there that RDA has made, it's looking increasingly likely the S8 will be SG-1's swansong. That said, chances are that Daniel, Carter and Teal'c will be popping up in Atlantis from time to time, as it's only RDA who wants to take a step back (due to his young daughter)- the rest have all said that they're happy to carry on jumping through the gate for a while yet.

The only character that's making a permanent crossover from SG-1 to Atlantis is Dr Mackay... you remember the irritating but brilliant astrophysicist that traded barbs with Carter in the episode "48 hours", and ended up being told to "Go suck a lemon!" by Sam? He could well turn out to be quite amusing.

Anyhow, I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt- the writing and production values will be as good as ever, of that I'm pretty certain, I guess we'll just need to see if the chemistry works with the new team, as well as it has with SG-1. Like I said, they have a hellava hard act to follow.

OK, this is starting to make sense now. I previously had a strong impression that what I now know was Season 6 was going to be the last ever 'Stargate;SG1'. Then along came Season 7, and I assumed that was the last one. Turns out they were stopping at 6, but got renewed for two seasons, which is why RDA wasn't in 7 so much as he was already fixing to spend more time with his aforementioned daughter (and now he's on ice...).

So (relief!) there is another season of 'Stargate' to come (yes, I know Callum mentioned 'S8' right at the start of the thread, but I'm not that clued up on 'SG' season numerology), and it'll probably have crossovers with 'Atlantis' as 'Buffy' did with 'Angel'.

And I liked the character McKay, but did you know they're replacing Jessica Stein (Dr. Weir) with a brunette?? I'm assuming that goes for S8 too...

Dunno, guess I just identify 'Stargate' with Sky, regardless of where an aricle says it's being broadcast.

I don't think people are too troubled by which shows are on Sky, or Sci Fi, or E4, or whatever! Perhaps the forum needs renaming, afterall it's just so that the people who only have terrestrial don't have to pick through a torrent of spoilers.

"on sky" means just that - the whole sky/cable package (ie non-terristerial)

NOT on sky one

Gateworld is indicating S8 is expected to start in the UK in September, with Atlantis presumably a week (or thereabouts) later.

Well according to something on Starfury, it seems Robert Patrick has done some filming for this

What do people think of Atlantis so far?
I 'm enjoying it but personally I don't think it's different enough from Stargate (group of people explore different worlds and have adventures through a stargate - same concept , different cast)

got up to episode 8 at the moment. i must say i'm really enjoying it. its familiar yet new. the characters are good and i like the idea of exploring in more detail the acients role in the whole stargate mythology

The recent two parter The Storm/The Eye is really the first time Atlantis has grabbed me. I rather like the Genii, especially Robert Davi's Commander Koyla - I thought they made much more interesting enemies than the Wraith. Also, for the first time, Sheppard seemed convincing as a soldier.

I agree actually having humans as the enemies is much better and I hope they keep the genii as bad guys.

I think the reason I like the Genii so much is that their motivations are very plausible and even, to some extent, sympathetic and this makes the tensions between them and the Atlantis team all the more tragically satisfying. Then again, I've long been a Magneto fan!

I have a technical quibble though, especially now, in light of recent events: lightning storm versus 1000 foot high killer wave... who'd win? I think in terms of Hiroshima bombs, the wave would have the edge. Effectively, most of the force of a hurricane is kinetic, and the electrical activity is a side effect. I suppose it could be argued that the shield only drew full power when it needed to. I still think it would take more power to hold back all that water...

I liked that too as I did, in general, this new ruthless edge to Sheppard. It just seemed more in keeping with what I'd expect from a character in that line of work - the Genii had made an deliberate assault on Atlantis so it's hardly surprising that Sheppard fights back. Even Sora recognised this. He just happened to be rather better at it than the Genii expected!
