Waves would have far more power but weren't they deflected around Atlantis rather than being held back?

I really enjoyed the two-parter. That bit where Sheppard raised the shield and doomed 55 soldiers to a splatty end was really cold
I have a technical quibble though, especially now, in light of recent events: lightning storm versus 1000 foot high killer wave... who'd win? I think in terms of Hiroshima bombs, the wave would have the edge. Effectively, most of the force of a hurricane is kinetic, and the electrical activity is a side effect. I suppose it could be argued that the shield only drew full power when it needed to. I still think it would take more power to hold back all that water...
