damn it! i got my numbers mixed up and realised that I haven't watched this one yet. Doh!
Smallville 5x12 - Reckoning
Not sure about this episode..
It had some great moments. The whole build up was done very well, Clark telling Lana his secret, crushing a rock into a diamond, etc etc. Then Lana dying was excellent, really effectively done.
And then... Time turns back, Lana's alive and Clark's Dad dies! Nooo!!
It was well done again, his death and after effects were very effective, I just feel Lana dying would have been better storywise. Lana's an annoying, whiny bitch of a character and I really would have prefered her going instead of Jonathan. I get they want to be as close to the movie continuity as they can, but there are plenty of great superman interpretations where Pop' Kent is alive.

Well I thought he was gonna die... It would have been cool if Lana had died cos I'm wondering it's the fifth season and Clark and Lois aren't close at all! Time is a ticking.
Does anyone know the original Superman mythology--I mean what the creators originally wrote or intended for the relationship between Clark and Lois? I really don't.
I've never read the comics or anything. But I know that back in that old 1950s Superman show that I've seen in reruns now and again, Clark and Lois were never more than colleagues and casual friends. I always thought the whole romance between the two was totally contrived for the movies and then was extended to the "Lois and Clark" TV series. But again, I really don't know.
I guess it doesn't matter because they can do anything they want with the characters at this point, but I was just wondering whether the romance and marriage between Clark and Lois was originally part of the story, or it's sort of a "recent" invention.

As far as Im aware in the original comics, Lois had a thing for Superman, but never got close enough to him for it to be anything approaching a relationship, she had a fascination for superman, and was more of a rival for Clark.

In the mid 80s they 'rebooted' the comics and started the continuity afresh, in the years since this, Lois has long since known about his double identity, and they have got married.
So it depends what you consider the 'real' thing. Dont get me started on "pre and post crisis" contiunuity!

So the romance/marriage is sort of a more recent invention. I kind of thought that might be the case, although I wasn't sure. Thanks for the info!
Glad I'm not the only one who was a bit confused by that

Maybe they want to take the Lionel relationship thing further and he was in the way? Would be an interesting angle that they haven't gone into in the Lois & Clark seasons I guess. I really hope they are going to do something good with it as otherwise it would have been a real waste

I just don't understand why they HAD to kill him off.
Well, for starters Superman movie canon has that Jonathan Kent dies when Clark is 18 years old and what with 'Superman Returns' being released in the next couple of months, maybe its keeping in context with that.
Loved this episode. The first fifteen minutes, my eyes were out on stalks..so much happened, and the emotion was so strong. I think the sight of Clark reacting to Lana's accident and then begging Jor-El for her life will stay with me for a long, long time. I haven't been able to watch it again because of it.
Yep, Lex is a grade a <bleep> and I will miss Jonathan, lots.
