Surely Buffy shouldn't have to subject herself to working in the Doublemeat Palace after the amount of times she's saved the world - you'd have thought something a little more dignified would be in order. The watcher's council has resources, they used to pay Giles a wage, I know Giles isn't Buffy's watcher anymore but you'd have thought that they'd make provisions so that the slayer could actually concentrate on doing her job and not be degraded by working in the worst job in history for crud wages.

Well i always wondered why the Watcher council did'nt pay the Slayer. After all it would save her time working and not distract her from the duties as a slayer. I guess maybe the council does'nt consider her the proper slayer after all she has bit the big one twice already.

The problem isn't really getting a job that makes her seem 'normal' its just that Buffy has done so much for the world that it really really sucks that she should have to work at a subsistence level in an awful job on top of her duties as a slayer. I was bringing to attention the unfairness of the situation and my objection to it, but it is an interesting question as to what job would be fit for a slayer. Ideally I suppose it would be getting paid for slaying. Buffy did do that stint with the initiative so I reckon the government must be aware of her, they could give her a few breaks *wink wink* but Buffy of course also has her super strength, but of course if she's worried about attracting undue attention a job where she reveals it on a daily basis could pose a bit of a problem I suppose. Its tricky but that doesn't make it right. I propose a pay-as-you-slay salary funded by the American Military. Their budget is large enough and Buffy is protecting the national interest, but she'd have to retain autonomy over her affairs which again, could pose a problem (as with the initiative) I suppose. Still, its gotta be better than the doublemeat palace - maybe she could just get a job in telesales, at least then she wouldn't have to wear the cow...

I think it's kind of cool that she has a naff job. I've had loads of naff jobs for low wages, so what!! Somwhow it makes Buffy more appealing and normal. (Theres no way I'd wear that though)

In the normal run of things, the Slayer would presumably be expected to live either under the guardianship of her parents or of her Watcher. There would be no need for her to be financially independent, and as with most sorts of independence this would presumably be something the Council would frown on.

The Council might provide for Buffy, but she would probably have to go to them and _ask_ for money, which would shift the balance of power to them. If Buffy relied on the Council for her income - and thus also for her continuing guardianship of Dawn - then they would be back in control, which would be for her an even more demeaning state of affairs than working at the Doublemeat Palace.

Plus the IRS would probably start asking questions about where the money came from, and if Buffy reassured them that a bunch of repressed old Englishmen gave her a big stack of cash every month...well, that would probably invite the kind of speculation that would quickly lose her custody of Dawn.
